SWR: Going to buy some makeup UPDATE

I in my mid twenties and I've finaly decide that maybe I should start wearing some makeup; I've never really worn makeup on my own by choice, just when I needed it for performances and such. My mom is going with me today to help me pick out some stuff that would be easy to use and such, since i'm clueless. I called her to ask if she thinks it would be better to go to a department store, or to just go to our local CVS. But instead of giving me a clear answer, she say: whatever you want. Except I don't know what I want!

Please help. TIA

ETA: Update a few posts down about my getting some L'Oreal makeup. I love this stuff.

4/2/06 Edit: did my own 'trial'. Here's a before and after.

I'm really sensative to most perfumes, so I can't even pass by a Sephora store without sneezing!

Go to a place you can try different things. Even get a free make-over...you may need some guidance along with some application tips.

MAC counter, Estee Lauder..etc.. come's to mind.

Also, when you know what you like, buy some things but then get yourself some drug store stuff. I buy department store stuff and then fill in at Duane Reade and Eckerd..etc..

If you want to start wearing make-up, I would go to a dept store and make an appt and they will tell you what will look good on you and how to apply it- At CVS, you wont know what colors look good and you might wind up buying make-up that wont look good and wasting your $. A place like MAC will show you how to put it on and what colors are good and you only have to buy $50 worth of product for all of that.

Department Store! And, if you're allergic like I am, you may want to look into Laura Mercier. Go see Michelle at Bloomingdale's at Roosevelt Field. She's AWESOME! (I'm allergic to CLINIQUE, so if Laura Mercier is good for me, it's good for ANYONE! lol). They have a foundation/moisturizing cream with SPF 15. So easy, I apply my make up in the car on the way to work. AWESOME stuff! Good luck and have fun! I love experimenting with make up!

ditto on sephora! and everything is coordinated for you, so a make up spaz such as myself finds it easy to buy make up

Not me! Laura Mercier contains lanolin
If you do have a lanolin allergy, ALMOST all MAC lipsticks do not contain it. But watch out for the amplified cremes, because they do have lanolin oil.

I agree with sephora as a good first place to go. One of the girls there can help you with colors.

I'm in the same boat - so my MOH is taking me to a department store to the clinique counter because I'm in my early to mid 20's. This is what she suggested.

WOW! There's actually SOMETHING out there that I'm NOT allergic to? lol. Interesting! (by the way... I LOVE Sephora, too! I'm like a kid in a candy store! That's a dangerous place!)

Since you are a newbie to makup I'd say go with the department store so you can get proper technique and instruction. I personally MAC

I would definitely go to a department store for your first time buying makeup. There are all different brands in one place. They will all let you try different colors, show you how to use it, and give you advice. I love Lancome, that's all I use, but I think any of the makeup counters will give you a free makeover if you spend $50 on products.

Re: SWR: Going to buy some makeup UPDATE

Thanks so much everyone for your advise.

So my mom picked me up from the subway, and I was almost all set to go to Queens Center Mall and my mom says that she thought we could go to BB&B near out house, cause they have a large selection of things. For once my mom was a great help. I ended up getting L'Oreal products, since that's what my mom used on me the other day. I got Infallible make up foundation. It's so light and so easy to apply, I love it. I also got their Double Extend mascara, 2 things of thier Wear Infinite eye shadows, a Volume Perfect lipstick and Colorjuice lipgloss. The best part is that my mom paid for all of it!

I tried Clinique once for a semi-formal when I was in undergrad. The stuff was ok, but for me the stuff I just got from L'Oreal is great. The foundation comes with a pump, so I can get just the right amount with out making a huge mess (i'm so accident proof).
