SWR: Why do people think its a crisis that I dont drink alcohol?

Original post by RisiLeigh

I have never cared for the taste of alcohol, I don't feel its a necessary part of my life in order to have a good time, and I don't drink it! Period, end of story. I don't judge people who do drink it, or make comments, etc.

Why do people feel the need to make stupid comments about the fact that I don't drink? Who the bleep cares?! And especially with my wedding, I've gotten comments like, 'What're you gonna do, toast with apple juice?' YES, maybe I am! So what, FH and I are gonna have a bad life b/c I don't toast with an alcoholic beverage?????? Give me a break!

My boss just came and asked me if I was sober today (from the wedding last night). I said, 'Yes b/c I don't drink.' He said, 'You don't drink??!! Well we need to change that!!' WHY?????? WHO CARES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I really hate people sometimes!

I quit drinking when I was PG with DD, and people were floored that I quit! Even to do this day people do not believe me when I say I do not drink, and yes I used sparkling apple cider for all of my toasts! (you could also use ginger ale)

Drinking in this society has become as accepted as breathing. Good for you sticking to your guns!

i've never been a huge drinker but I do enjoy in moderation. lately, i haven't been drinking as much because I want to lose some weight.
I go out with clients and they look very confused when I order a club soda.... It's so bizarre.

Oh I get this all of the time also. I just don't like alcohol. Once in a while I will have a glass of wine. People don't understand that I don't have to drink in order to have fun

It's so nice to know that there are others out there (or FH's) who are like me and understand where I am coming from! It's frustrating! The Swan Club is already aware that they need to provide either sparkling cider or ginger ale for me b/c I won't drink the champagne.

Re: SWR: Why do people think its a crisis that I dont drink alcohol?

I'm a recovering addict/alcoholic. I've been clean for 2 years and 9 months. When I was in rehab I had a huge reservation of toasting at my wedding day (at that point I didn't even have a boyfriend). Now, I don't even think twice about it! Actually I've told my DOC, the Matre d, and the wedding hall about 10000000 times to make sure that there is absolutely NOOOOOOOO alcohol at my table excpet in my FH glass. I'm marring a police officer and you know how they drink- that was such a major thing for me that my FH accepts the fact that now not only that I can't drink, I don't want to anymore. I've found having fun without alcohol is so easy. You do not need that in your life if you don't want it. Ignore all the comments, they will eventually go away, people are just stupid some times, the only way they know how to have fun is with alcohol and they are the ones with a problem, definitly not you.

Thank you. Seriously don't stress about it. Gingerale- and everything will be fine- no one will know the difference unless you tell them.
Good luck!!

Some people just dont drink...simple as that.

Just like some people dont smoke pot, do coke, ecstasy, etc. Some people were never curious enough to try it!

I also wanted to add a note that FH aunt MADE him take a sip of champage when she toasted us for an engagement! She was like come on, take one sip and he felt bad so he did but I think it just barely touched his lips! Anyway, how rude was that! I felt so bad for him!

I say fudge em! It's a personal decision and that's that! I drink occasionally although I should not and by occasion I mean New Years. I understand where you are coming from. I do not even want an open bar, I just do not like the effects of alcohol certain people, seeing people drunk really angers me and I will not be angered on my day
