I am applying for law school this Jan & it would start in Sept. of 2005. It was sort of a last min thing. See, most law programs are full time & I could never find a way to do them & quit my job - even with FI income. But one of the programs I love, Hoffstra, just started a 4 year P/T program. My FI is sooo amazingly supportive & wants me to do this so bad. He & my closest friends can see me as nothing else but a lawyer (I have an Masters in Social Work - so think advocacy...not chacing ambulances )
Problem - I'll be getting married on Sept. 4, 2005 & then going to my first day of classes Sept. 6, 2005.
Everyone (even my mom & BM's) keep saying you have to have a HM right away or push school off till 2006. I hate pushing school off b/c that pushes kids, house etc off.
I just don't know if this is tacky or weird to get married 2 days before the start of law school & put off the HM till probly winter break?
I wish people's negative opinions didn't matter but they do find a way of creeping under your skin....

Re: Tacky/Weird to not honeymoon right away?
I'm in law school and have quite a few friends who are, or who have gotten married while in school... most got married and just put off the HM until the break... it's really not that uncommon. For myself, I graduate in May but I'll be in my first few months of my first job when we get married so my FI didn't think we would have time for a nice HM, so we actually took an amazing 'pre-honeymoon' trip to Switzerland as part of the engagement gift... don't feel like you have to do what everyone does... do what feels right for you...

My advice is to do what is best for you. I just got married 17 days ago, we went on a mini moon and are going on our honeymoon in July to Tahiti. (can't wait). I am gald we are waiting we will be relaxed. It took us 2 weeks not to feel so exhuasted after the wedding. I went thru Graduate school and got a masters degree and there are no jobs in my field. Yes, I am glad I have my Masters degree but upset I am not in my field. You really have to follow your heart on this one, and do what is best for you. Good luck in whatever u choose. Hope this helps.

I say follow your dream. My MIL told me that whether I sat on my but for that year or went to school either way that year will go by. You are better off starting your dream and enjoying your HM later. JMO

Please please please, whatever you do, do not delay law school for a 10 day (or however long) vacation! As great as a honeymoon is, that is ultimately what it comes down to. You will be delaying your life by a year to do it, that doesn't make sense. And, if you're talking about having kids, which it seems you are, your career is going to have enough delays as it is. Regardless of what you decide about a 2 day getaway or just the honeymoon over break, please do not even consider delaying law school for it!
(Sorry, this is a sticking point with me.)

you need to do what is best for YOU. i don't think it is wierd nor tacky to forego your honeymoon to further your education. in all honestly, i think it is very admirable.
i commend your decision to go to law school and you should reward yourself at the end of the semester w/ a long, well-deserved/needed belated honeymoon.

i am getting married in oct and waiting until jan. for my honeymoon. me and fh have school and fh owns a landscaping business so he won't be able to take off during that time. we will be going to atlantic city after the reception for 2 or 3 days.

Re: Tacky/Weird to not honeymoon right away?
we are in a similar situation. i am in graduate school, and next year i won't be able to work very much because i will be doing my clinical hours for speech. my october 23 wedding is smack in the middle of the semester so i am not sure what we are going to do.
we are either going to say screw it and just go on a honeymoon, or we are going to go for a few nights and go later. we need to figure it out soon. i feel like i change my mind everyday.
i don't think it would be bad if you held it off until you could do it. you will really enjoy it then.

Hmmm not quite sure how NOT taking a honeymoon right away would be tacky and I think that is HORRIBLE that your family is tell you that.
Coming from a law school grad I will tell you don't be a fool go right away to school and take your honeymoon in Dec trust me when I say YOU WILL NEED IT THEN!
Anyway - FH is in law school now (In fact he is still in MI while I am in NY getting ready for the wedding taking his finals!!!!) He finishes his semester on Sunday and then (he is in a year round program) will return on May 3rd. We wanted to go to tahiti, since I have been all over europe and to hawaii, and asia, so we decided that 1 week was NOT long enough to do the vacation we want and so we are going to have fun instead and do disney for 1 week immediately after the wedding and a celebrity cruise in August on FH's next break. Actually it works out MUCH better this way because we have something to look forward to after the wedding is done - and we will take that big trip for an anniversary after he is done with school (may 05) and the bar

Re: Tacky/Weird to not honeymoon right away?
Sorry it took so long for me to respond! Thank you all so much. This support is exactly what I needed. Since we all have passing schedules we set up a time to talk about what my FI & I are going to do (the wed, 2-day, law sch, HM-Dec ) & also discuss how much this hurt both our fielings. It's so hard to plan such a big event in our lives & in our family's with a chip on our shoulders!! I hope it goes well & if it doesn't it's their loss!
Thanks again SOOO much!!!!!!!!

Having gone to law school, you will definitely want to take the vacation after finals. That way, you can really relax!
