How many of you are native New Yorkers? The reason I ask is...I work with 2 girls who are both from the South. Last week-they were bashing New Yorkers and how rude they are, what horrible drivers, etc. I guess my question is-would you and are you offended when you hear this type of stuff? I think my attitude is-if you don't like it here, then leave!!!

I'm a native New Yorker...do I get offended when people say stupid sh!t? Not really - I assume that the people spewing nonesense are idiots and therefore, as an intelligent, native New Yorker I am far superior because I'm not ignorant! That, and being from the south they must be related to their husbands by more than just marriage.
See? the stupidity works both ways!

heehee...you almost made me spit water out my nose!! My sentiments exactly!! I think that this is stewing up inside me because the girl who says the most offensive remarks almost called all my wedding guests 'ba$tards'--she left her umbrella at my wedding and then thought one of my guests walked off with it!

Native NYer and what bothers me the most is when I go out of the state and get asked a million questions.
I was in Cancun and this chic from Wisconsin asked me if i ever seen some one get shot or stabbed.
I was in FL last year and I was buying something and I used my debit card and got asked for my drivers license. When I gave her my drivers license and she saw NY I dont think she knew what to do. Should she call security and have me investigated, was she afraid i was going to rob her, she was so scared.
That bothers me the most when people stereotype me becase I come from NY.
But my favorite is when I go out of state and people tell me oh talk i love your accent.
'What accent, i aint go no accent losa!'

heehee...that's my dream line!! I want to tell these girls that their way of thinking is ignorant and close-minded and this is the type of stereo-typing that makes this world impossible to live in. It's such a blanket statement--truly, it is like saying 'all southerns are inbred red-necks'--is it true? Absolutely not! I feel better already!!
Edited to say--my apologies to any southerns--as the case with new yorkers...there are always a few rotten apples in the bucket!

I'm a native NY and am offended by the same thing out of towners are offended by, like rude and obnoxious people. I'm always shocked by how friendly and nice people are when I am out of state. Believe me, I would love to get out of NY but for now, it's not possible.

I think though my total favorite was last year in September I was in Florida and I was in Denny's and the waitress was talking to me, FI, and our friends and she asked where we were from. Our friends said well we used to live in NY and now we are down here, been here for over a year. FI and I said NY born and raised. She said to us 'I am so sorry for the loss NY had on 9/11/2001'
That blew me away. She was really nice and sincere about it.
That actually put my faith back in people that are out of state, they do have compassion for NYers.

OMG - just remembered - when FH and I went to mexico, coming home we went through customs in Dallas....FH has major issues with Texas, btw (I love to tease him b/c my grandmother used to live there) anywho....we go through customs and here's FH - great tan, linen shirt, white shorts, sunglasses - looking like he just came back from the beach (duh!) and the customs guy says in pathetic spanish 'take your sunglassess off.' He says believe it or not, we do profile here so you'll get stopped w/ the sunglasses on. Then he looks at our passports and says 'BROOKLYN! well I'd profile you anyway! Ya ever been to sheepshead bay?'
FH was like jackass - go home to your sister-wife!

Another native New Yorker, and **** proud of it. I went to college in California, and the questions are unreal. They were convinced that I carried a knife. I used to get asked all the time how many times I had been mugged. The accent always came up as well. I just tell people I don't have an accent you do!! I don't let comments bother me. I think they are all jealous that we live in the best place in the world, at least that is my opinion.
edited to add: we have the best pizza and bagels too!!

Starhead people are nicer out of NY I agree with that. But you take the good with the bad.
When my friends came from California and Georgia, we took them to Central Park and the Californian said is it safe? I answered with arent there major gangs in Calif.
She laughed and she got the point

Im sorry but I love traveling and seeing how others live.
But the most good awful place to be is in Waverly Ohio, Pauls mom lives there and we visit once a year for thanksgiving.
Everytime we drive through I make the same comment ' Cmon Paul dont tell me these people are not all related'

That's the other thing!! It's like--these 2 girls are ALWAYS complaining about it but one of them is always going into the city to shop, go to shows, eat out, etc. I just don't understand. I'm not sure why I'm so offended by it. Last week when I was driving with them and they went off in their 'I hate NYers' tangent-I calmly explained that you can't make statements like that about anyone because it's not fair--and I think they thought it was funny I was offended and then really started in.

Chippatrid - I have found the same thing re: 9/11. When we were in London for our honeymoon, DH had to show his licence at the hotel. His NYPD badge is on the other side. Well they were beside themselves, not only was he a NYer, but a cop as well. We got a few upgrades b/c of that. That was really nice of them.

My ex boyfriend was from the south and the whole time we were together he use to bash NY to no end. Saying how rude everyone was, how NYers can't drive and how much better it was in the south. After we broke up he moved back down south again and now tells everyone down there how amazing NY is lol...go figure.
