taking a little poll...

Original post by Leelee

How many of you are native New Yorkers?
The reason I ask is...I work with 2 girls who are both from the South. Last week-they were bashing New Yorkers and how rude they are, what horrible drivers, etc.
I guess my question is-would you and are you offended when you hear this type of stuff?
I think my attitude is-if you don't like it here, then leave!!!

Re: taking a little poll...

I got a good one too...

Yesterday i get a call at work from some lady trying to sell me something for my company...nicely I decline and the next thing I know is...she wants to know if all women in NY are the same....WHAT??? I have no clue where this woman is coming from and that is a pretty broad question....she explained that she had been watching a reality show on dating in NY and since the 4 girls on the show were snobby and a little loose...were we all like that....I tried to explain...without wanting to rip her through the phone...that we are all very different. She said that she had never been to NY and everyone has told her that it is a very dangerous place and we are all rude!!! I really have no idea of why I continued to speak with this woman, but I got very defensive and felt the need to defend all women in NY...LOL Let's just say, I don't think she will ever make that trip that she was speaking of!!! The nerve...

It's truly hard to write with the expression that we both had on the phone...I found it pretty comical when I hung up...People are wierd!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: taking a little poll...

People that aren't native to NY will never truly understand NY, but how anyone couldn't LOVE this place is beyond me.
I'm a native NYer, Long Island and Manhattan. I can't ever imagine living anywhere else.

I don't get offended at other people's comment's. I have that whole 'I'm a NYer so I'm better than you are' attitude, and I honestly think that the people that make such comments, just aren't smart enough, street savvy enough or intelligent enough for their opinions to matter to me.

I've met a lot of people from the south were very impressed with the fact that I was from 'the city'
but I've never been impressed by anyone that told me they were from Kansas.

I am a native New Yorker. My midwestern FI and his friends think it is 'cool' and I inevitably get asked a million questions every time I meet someone else.
I will always be a NYer even after April, when I trade in my MetroCard to plant roots in Missouri. (I still freak out even time I think I am going to be living in MISSOURI- that is the ignorant New Yorker in me, I didn't think anyone actually lived in MO, and I still think the world revolves around NYC)

I am from NY and proud of it. We walk fast and talk fast. Thats how we are and thats how we are going to stay. We want things done our way or no way. That is what makes NY New York. We band together when we need to to support each other and that is what makes NY so strong and one of the Best cities in the World.

I'm a native NY girl...and proud of it!

This post reminds me of a joke someone just sent me.

A NY girl and a California girl find themselves sitting together on a plane.

The NY girl, being the warm and friendly sort of person we all are, turns to the west coast girl, smiles and asks, 'So, where are you from?'.

The Cali girl replied, in a rather haughty tone, 'Honey, I come from someplace where we know not to end a sentence with a preposition'.

The NY girl responds, still smiling, 'OK, then, where are you from, *****?'

LOL

P.S. Robeymuse, where in Missouri? My ex's family lived in Springfield for a while. It's actually very pretty out there. They lived in beautiful homes (which would have cost 10x in NY), taxes were very, very low. Its a very different way of life, but not too bad...

Thanks girls--I feel tons better!! I'm not going to let this bother me as much and take the high road as New Yorkers do!

Im am Proud NYer!! born and raised. The best comment I ever heard was from my soroity sister...who has lived in rural MD and went to school in York PA (she said it was a big city to her!!)When she found out that I was working in NYC and taking the subway, she asked me if I carried a gun or knief?!?! W.T.F??? Do people think that NYC is that bad?? maybe some areas but not in midtown!!!

I was born on LI and have been here except for 4 years in ALbany at school. I would take offense to it, I would tell them to drive their red neck @$$e$ back to the south on their tractor. Just Kidding - I don't mean to offend!!!!

Re: taking a little poll...

I was born and raised in NY, worked there and moved to Florida last year. I've also lived in the Midwest and the West. When someone says to me that people from NY are nasty, I usually reply..'not all people from NY are nasty, I've run into my share from here(FL, midwest, west)..the difference is that a NYer will tell you the way it is to your face, everyone else does it behind your back..which do you prefer?'

The other thing about living in FL, I hate to correct everyone on this but, the state is NOT made up of all NYers that are transplanted here. Yes, there are plenty of people from NJ but, there is a ton of people from Canada, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin.

And here is a Florida laugh for you...when the weather is nice and the fishing is good..people don't show up for work!!

Like I keep saying-I'm happy to hear I'm not the only person who would take offense to these remarks!

I’m a native New Yorker – born and raised in Manhattan. In college I dated a guy from the deep South and I can’t begin to tell you some of the things his Southern friends said to me. I did take offense at first but then I realized how ignorant they were. This guy even told me at one point that he could never marry a Yankee b/c they are the worst. I did dump him but mind you all of these people were up here going to school. I definitely made then aware of that and told them that NY was not only an entrance but an exit so if you don’t like it get out. I have tons of Southern friends and majority don’t think this way but like all places you always have a few who think where they come from is the best.

Native New Yorker here. I lived in Florida for two years and taught there. All the kids thought NYers were these really horrible people.

Re: taking a little poll...

well said Fletch!!
there are always a few who ruin it for everyone else...and it goes all ways. That's what I told these girls the other day--sure, there are some idiots on the road but it doesn't represent EVERYONE living in NY!!

Re: taking a little poll...

the idiots on the road are the dumb hicks from elsewhere w/ rental cars

Re: taking a little poll...

I'm a native New Yorker and I don't find it offensive if comments are made, I have found people outside of New York to be more friendly at times, Don't forget how many out-of-towners jumped in their cars to drive 15 hours or more straight to help their fellow 'human beings' when the 9-11 tragedy happened.

I guess people are different all over, I don't think it matters where your from. There's Good and Bad in everyone.
