Taking the brides last name???

Original post by Danielle&Scott

Danielle and I were discussing this the other night. She doesnt like my last name, and I really don't either. She wants me to take her last name when we get married instead of her taking my last name. The only reason I think this sounds like a good idea is because I don't want our kids to have to go through the torture of from the children in school like I did. There were plenty of names to make up to call me because of my last name. Thanks dad lol.

So has anyone ever heard of the groom taking the brides last name when they are married? Is it just tradition that the bride takes the grooms last name or is there a law that says that this has to be done?
Thanks,
Scott

If you think your father might be hurt, and you're not sure if you even want to do it, depending on your relationship with your father, you might want to sit down and have a men-to-man with him about it. tell him it's something you were considering....but you won't do it if it would hurt him.....see what he thinks......

i have to say, i am so curious as to what your last name is now.

I got picked on also for my last name, but that didnt sway my decision to take my FH last name at all. I want to take his last name, b/c it is his, and b/c its so special to do that.

HOWEVER - this is about YOU and your fiancee, do what makes you BOTH happy and make sure it is something that you can live with regardless of what it is!

Good Luck!!

You ROCK! for even considering it. GO SCOTT!!!

I tried to get my FH to think about it but he immediately said no way. I said why is it ok for me to take your name, blah, blah, blah but he wasn't hearing it.

I have heard of it, but don't know anyone who has done it.

i totally agree i wanted us both to use both hyphenated and fh nearly had a coronary-
you are way cool man - koodos!

the groom MAY take her name...and yes, I have one set of friends where he took her name and she took hers.....

she went from _____ Smith (not real)
he was ____ Jones

and they both became __& ____ Smith Jones, they don't use the Smith part though...it's more like a middle name for the both of them

Re: Taking the brides last name???

Now I don't know what I am going to do. I havent even thought about how it is going to make my dad feel. The last thing I want to do is hurt him. He is such a great guy with an amazing heritage. I think I may just keep things as they are for now, and have Danielle take my last name. I know it may be hard on my kids, but I know also that kids will think of anything to make fun of other than peoples names, and I cannot change everything in life....There will always be something.

Thanks,
Scott

P.S. My last name isnt as bad as everyone thinks...The big think that bothers me is that no one knows how to pronounce it and it always comes out sounding worse than it is.....

Hi everyone, it's Danielle. When I first told Scott to change his name I was kidding. I did tell him I was keeping my maiden name for work ( I'm a teacher) and that I was thinking about whether or not to change my name or hyphen it.

I don't expect Scott to change his name, but why do men automatically assume we have no problems changing ours? It is also part of who I am and my hertiage. Just a thought.

I think you should keep your last name.

I'm adding my YOU ROCK! to the others. There's no reason for women to take men's names other than tradition, which means there's no reason for it not to go the other way, too. On the whole family-name thing, can't you just use your last name as a middle name for the kids? Then the name is still there, but they don't get made fun of.

I know a couple where the guy's last name was Stank. So she didn't change her name and the kids will have her last name. They just didn't want to put their kids through the torture for something that really doesn't matter much anyway. I also know a couple where they both changed to a new name.

I would love for my FH to take my last name! We have discussed it a few times b/c he does not have much of a connection to his, but he is still not totally convinced.

I had the same thing with no one pronouncing it right so it came out sounding worse than it actually was.. it definately was rough through school

do you have any brothers, scott ? or does your family name die with you?

Re: Taking the brides last name???

I personally think the tradition of a bride taking her husband's last name just because people tell her to is ridiculous. Each couple should make up their own mind. I personally want to keep my last name. I'm an only child and the last one with this last name. Other brides really want to change their name and I think that is great if the tradition means something to them. It doesn't mean anything to me so I'm doing what makes me comfortable.

Scott - I think you need to decide for yourself. Asking people on here is probably the wrong way to go. Knowing what makes them happy isn't something that should influence your decision!

I am just asking for advice. Because I needed to talk to someone about this and I find it easy to ask the brides and grooms of LIW. In the end the decision will be mine though.
Thanks Everyone.

I say, if you want to, go for it. My friend's didn't like their names, so they changed it to a totally different name that they chose together after their wedding. Do whatever feels right to you.
