Taxi's instead of Shuttles

Has anyone ever had taxis take their guests from the hotel to the reception instead of shuttles? If so, how did it go?

We are thinking of doing that (paying for all the taxis) rather than have a shuttle - the shuttles are so much more expensive!! But I am concerned about the logistics of the taxis - having just one or two shuttles is simpler...
