TEA CEREMONY?!

TEA CEREMONY?!

For those of you who did the tea ceremony, where and when did you do it? Some people say before the ceremony, some say you're supposed to do it after the ceremony....

If you get jewelry as gifts, do you have to wear it for the rest of the wedding? I was at a wedding where the bride wore ALL of the jewelry for the entire time....is it disrespectful if I take if off after the tea ceremony?

oh, it's an asian tradition. You offer tea to each set of parents as a sign of respect....and then your families give you money/jewelry as wedding gifts. There's probably more to it, but I'm terrible with asian traditions...

Oh, that sounds really sweet. So you're saying if they give you jewelry as a gift, and you might not want to wear it the whole time, it might be seen as disrespectful..I understand. Well, obviously I have no advice to offer, I am just always interested in different cultural traditions..good luck!!

Hey there! Asian bride here...doing the tea ceremony as well. (AND a Korean one, as my FI is Korean). Because I am doing two, I think I am going to try to get one done right after the first dance. I might do the tea before the ceremony. Still not sure yet - very stressed about the timelines with all these traditions. As for the jewelry, I'm pretty sure you take it off after you change out of the cheongsam. I plan to change into another gown when the party gets started so im comfortable and i definetely wont be wearing all the jewelry throughout the reception. Let me know what you decide!

i too am doing a tea ceremony, but am doing one on the night of our chinese banquet, which will probably be the weekend before the wedding weekend. i'm not sure how to approach the jewelry thing. i think it depends on your family. i know my family won't be offended if i took the jewelry off. but then again, i'm not wearing it to my wedding. let me know what you decide to do.

I will also be doing the Tea Ceremony.
Right now, I am undecided on when I should do it.

3 options:
#1 - have the tea ceremony the morning of the wedding. (at your parents' house with all your uncles and aunts there and at the groom's parents house with all his uncles & aunts)
#2 - have the tea ceremony during the reception (if you have a big family, this might takes 30mins to 1 hr)
#3 - have the tea ceremony the night before... invite the bridal party and all uncles and aunts to dinner the night before the wedding (rehearsal dinner/ tea ceremony) .

I really don't want to have the tea ceremony during the reception. We are having a live band. I want to really enjoy my wedding and dance the night away. I plan to go with either option 1 or 3. Probably 3, since we need to take the bridal party out, why not add the uncles and aunts to the mix. Chinese food is not expensive, which is a good thing! Yea...

You don't need to wear the jewelry right away during the tea ceremony. You can collect all the jewelry during the tea ceremony and put them all on later when you wear your chinese dress.

I am also getting married 4/26/08!

Our ceremony is starting in the afternoon so before the ceremony we're asking all the people that want to participate in the tea ceremony to meet an hour or so early at the ceremony/reception site. I'll be wearing a kwa during the tea ceremony and then afterwards I'm taking all the jewelry off and changing into my white/ivory dress for the ceremony. The jewelry is going to be locked up in the bridal suite.

At another wedding I went to they actually had the tea ceremony during the reception and asked all the participants to go to a separate room during dinner.
