oh yeah this is a good one
italians used to have these women that they paid to come to funerals and cry and wail
in italian culture wakes and funerals are over the top - with people screaming and crying and throwing themselves around. . .
my parents call wakes here 'death parties' bc people talk and chat and look at pictures
when my grandma passed my mom, dad, aunt and uncle sat in the front and did not MOVE the entire time. . . . they greeted everyone that came to them but there was NO talking to them about ANYTHING except to offer condolences - it was freaky a little bit if you arent used to it
anyway so it was kind of an honor to have people freaking out at your funeral so they would hire these women to just cry and wail and carry on
i think they were called Lamentari? if you have ever seen 'Divorce, Italian Style' they were in there i believe
in the christian orthodox religion its actually the opposite...they say you are not supposed to mourn in the way of crying out loud, screaming and things like that because the soul wont go into heaven but instead remain here on earth. And then you get all these crazy stories bc of this, like in my family my great uncle cried histerically at his wifes funeral and supposedly everyone still hears her voice bc of this
also in the orthodox religion, you dig up a person's grave after 7 years and you take out their bones and clean it with this oil thing or whatever and its this whole other ritual and things that go along with it...my family that is old school does this but not sure if all orthodox people do that, especially not here since i dont think you can
They do this in crete. Fh told me this. Crazy

Not all Puerto Ricans steal silverware. We do steal a lot of those hotel condiments and hotel towels though...
I am not puerto rican and I take all the condiments from hotels! If they are good ones I put them in my bag each night so the housekeeper will put out new ones each day
I TAKE THEM ALL TOO. HEHE
AND I AM NOT HISPANIC EITHER.

Just because you're from queens does not mean you're ghetto. I know somebody who always makes comments like OH NO i dont go into queens, and once about if she had to take the train it would have to be close by to where she was going and not walk too much, yes bc you will get robbed or shot once you step foot into queens...Its not all urban, we do have residential areas and is very suburban like.
My step-brother is from Plainview and everytime he comes to my moms house in FOREST HILLS, he cant stop saying how ghetto it is. I crack up at him and tell him Im gonna drop him off in Brownsville Brooklyn and then he could tell me what ghetto is. I hate when people misuse the word 'ghetto' I know what real 'ghetto' is.
hey I'm from Plainview!!!! BUT it depends upon each individual person...when I think 'ghetto' I certainly don't think Forest Hills or even any area in queens.

honestly i dont think i can handle that with a loved one, to dig them up and take out their bones. BUt i guess its custom for them so they're just used to it...My cousin happened to be visit after like 10 years or so and while she was there my grandfather died, she would call all freaked out bc she had to sleep in the house and my grandfather was laid out on a table, it must be hard

italians can't say a baby is beautiful without saying god bless him/her for this reason
if you say an italian baby is beautiful and dont bless him you better hope that grandma isnt listening
hahah OMG I know my whole family always will make a statement then it ends with a god bless them.
'Oh he's such a good eater, god bless him'
'Oh she's got the most beautiful eyes, god bless her'
Thanks for that Tilde, I kinda didn't notice that until you just mentioned it hah!

Re: Amish funerals. The deceased are laid in very plain 'Little House' type wooden coffins. The services are held in the home. Whereas the Amish are clothed in black and a few other dark colors during their lives, when they are buried, they are completely attired in white. This is facinating to me because right now I'm reading Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult about a young Amish woman accused of murder and JP is so detailed in explaining Amish culture and religion...
Kim, you've touched on something: That the Amish are like non-Amish, in many ways, you just don't hear about it, because of the secrecy in their culture. The Amish can commit crimes, have mental illness, and as someone pointed out earlier, before joining the Church the Amish kids drive cars, have drinking fests, get arrested for DUI, do drugs, etc. One thing that peeves me about tour places in Lancaster County, is that they don't give a correct view of the Amish. For instance, some Amish are putting aside tradtion, and having indoor plumbing and building huge, beautiful houses, with real curtains, not green pull down shades!!! One Amish rule I wish they'd toss is their permitted methods of travel!! I cannot begin to tell you how often my one Brother-in-law has been excommunicated fom the Amish Church, for flying in an airplane!! He 's traveled a lot, even to Europe!!! But the biggest travel method, that I really wish they would abandon is the horse and buggy. In Lancaster County, many people have been killed or injured for life, because of runaway buggies, our 30 yr. old Son included. And finally, one thing LIW might not know is that two of the little Amish girls from the Nickle Mines Shooting, have a connection to my Husband. One was the Niece of his Sister, and one was the Granddaughter of his Cousin. Mary MOB

So ALL amish teenagers are allowed to leave for a bit to do what they want and they come back with no problems at all? I used to think that usually it was somebody leaving all that behind when they came here.

Amish teens , or anyone for that matter, can return to the Amish. A man who's a friend of ours returned after many years, and the reason I heard was so that he would be taken care of in his old age, by the Amish Mary MOB

thank you for answering my question...Very interesting and it is true that many of us don't know alot when it comes to the Amish...I recently saw Amish people on the LIRR and i was very surprised, in my head i came up with a whole theory of why they were there, i was like did something happen? did they get tired of that lifestyle, did they HAVE to leave?
Although there was a reality show YEARS ago, kind of like a real world thing with strangers all living together and one of them was Amish and i do remember him saying that he was going back and he was just here to learn how things are different and about other cultures. I felt real bad because he was having a hard time adjusting to some things

people think that Jewish is a nationality instead of a religion and dont understand how i can be Italian AND Jewish
when people say 'what are you?', a lot of jewish people say their religion rather than their nationality
soooo true - I HATE when I have to say 'yes, but what ethnicity are you' Its very odd. Of course the jewish religion has a lot of heavy cultural influence on ones life - but are you a Russian, Israeli , Brazilian.... so glad you said this!

Some Amish, like the guy you just mentioned, and another Brother-in-law of mine, are very curious about things outside their community, in the non-Amish world. My Brother-in-law is really into studying history. One Amish niece was an Amish teacher. Not all the Amish are as 'backward' as people think. Since many have businesses, or work with the public, their views on life are different from Amish who stick to not having much connection to the 'outside world'. Mary MOB

i knew some did go out and live in other areas but i just was never sure about how the rest of their community viewed this and if they were looked down upon if they choose to do so. Glad to know its accepted, well its good for those that do choose to do so. I did read that many do go back to the amish community when they leave, but then i would wonder they were treated when they returned

i have a good one
not all priests are kid touchers not all parishes are money grubbing useless institutions
SOME priests are amazing and helpful and truly holy SOME parishes are amazing centers for their community
The CHURCH as in the Vatican has MONEY, the parishes are run by the generosity of their parishoners on Sunday . . .
i sound like a bible thumper sometimes but i truly am not - i didnt go to church from the ages of 18 -23 and i started going back after i was engaged, but these are just views that i feel i see EVERYWHERE about the church and its not really true ( of course, in some cases it is but they are the exception NOT the rule )

You are soo right about this! I get into fights at my work over this, because they always 'joke' saying not to have a ring bearer you don't know what the priest will do, im like *** is wrong with people these days! its horrible that people view the churches this way because of a FEW bad people.
