Teacher Ed programs - NYU vs. Columbia vs. LI universities?
For the teachers out there - does it matter where one gets their Master's? It seems like everyone I know who teaches on LI went to a LI school, but next year I'm applying to NYU and Columbia b/c now I live in the city.
Maybe it's just b/c LI schools do LI student teacher placements where NYU and Columbia are more spread out?

Re: Teacher Ed programs - NYU vs. Columbia vs. LI universities?
I am not a teacher but a few of my friends are teachers.
One of my friends went to undergrad at NYU and is getting her Masters from a school in queens and is working in queens. (lives in queens)
Another got her undergrad from NYU is working out in LI and got her masters from Fordham (manhattan campus). (lives in LI)
And yet another, got her undergrad from Pace (in Westchester - is working in the Bronx and got her masters from Fordham (the city). (Lives in westchester - i think it is much harder to find a job in westchester with no experience).
Dont know if this helps...hope it does...

I will be going for my masters in teaching this coming fall, and I honestly chose the school for the fact that it is the closest to where I live. I teach private lessons (I'm a music teacher) in the same area as where I am going to go to school, so that was a bonus, as well. I think it's a few factors like: how much do you want to spend, travel, what exact teaching degree do you want to get? Honestly, for a teaching degree, IN MY OPINION, you can go wherever, as long as it's a strong program. I don't care about the name of the school or what not. Just that it's cheap enough and close!

From what I've heard from my teacher friends, if you want to go anything beyond high school, Columia or NYU are too high priced (they offer their prestige factor - ie Columbia is an ivy - if you will and you PAY FOR IT). If you want something in Elementery or High school teaching, the one on the islands are more affordable yet give you a great resource because they help place in NYC and LI.
My friends who came out of NYU didn't go into public High Schools or anything - they went on to PhD's and the program - from what I've been told - is kinda geared toward that.

I think you can request to student teach anywhere...no matter the school...Columbia has a great program...but as stated you pay for it...
but I got my degree at Albany...so I don't think it matters too much

honestly it depends on the program. i got my degree in special ed with a concentration in autism and i was not happy with my program. i say research, research research. dont make the mistake i made by going to a private university and paying $$$$$$$$$ only to hate the program.

from what I understand... Columbia's Teacher's college has the best reputation... I think they are all rather highly regarded, though, as my brother got his from CW Post and now has a great job in one of the top districts - just got tenure. Good luck!
