What is the proper attire at a school district? I am coming from a very informal company and want to look 'put together', but not overdone !!

Exactly, skirts and a shirt. You will rarely see teachers in 'suits'. I only wear one if I have a parent/ teacher meeting.

p.s. - thanks ladies. My wardrobe needed some updating so I went to the mall and got some button downs.
also, I saved $$ because it is tax free week and I didn't even know !!!!

when you're trying stuff on you've gotta do the belly test. stand in front of a mirror and reach up, and the bend down to touch your toes. If your belly and your back don't show, you're good :) if it does, you probably want something bigger :)
That's just something my professors told me to do for practicum and student teaching :)

Exactly! Sometimes a skirt (esp. when it's hot out). My shoes are dressy sandles, low heels, or nice loafers. Some places dress down more than others.

Old Navy has some really nice dress pants and button downs that aren't expensive. I always get my pants from there. They also have stain and wrinkle free Khaki's~perfect for teachers!!

Belly check, boob check and butt check!! Everyday it is mandatory. I am big chested and missed a boob check one morning while student teaching and I think my cooperating teacher almost had a heart attack when I bent over to catch a koosh ball!
Never again!! Check is done every morning!!

We have pajama day, sports team day, clash day and I can't remember what else. But by far pajama day is the best!!! Though going out to the deli at lunch that day can be alittle embarrassing.

you'll get a good feel for appropriate dress once you start. see what the other female teachers your age wear. in my high school, young females in jeans is totally unacceptable. however, in an elementary school its very common. i definitely agree with the boob, belly & butt check! its crucial everyday! especially in a high school where my rear end is in their face as i write on the chalkboard! you also want to be comfortable, which totally changes your shoe options. for me, heels are usually out.
