Teachers, I have a ?

Teachers, I have a ?

My daughter is in high school. She was out for two weeks with the flu (was really bad). Thus she missed gym. Gym teacher says there is no such thing as an excused absence for gym so she has to make up the classes. My daughter has no study halls. Gym teacher says she has to miss lunch to make up the classes. What! I want my daughter to eat and have a little break during the day. Teacher said no eating during gym class even in this case. So, what do you think? Call principal, district office..........................................

Also, I said she can stay after school. Gym teachers do not stay after!

I'm an elementary teacher, but I never heard of a gym teacher asking kids to make-up gym, especially b/c it was only 2 weeks. I'd definitely speak to the principal. I know gym is a mandatory requirement of the state, but EVERYONE misses gym sooner or later due to absence, etc. I DOUBT he has everyone make-up gym.

Also, I don't believe they can require that she misses lunch to make-up gym.

Again, I'm on the elementary side, but it doesn't sound right.

get a note from the MD saying that she cannot participate in gym - ask him to backdate it.

Next, call the Principal, and stress that she is a good student, doesn't have time for a studyhall because her schedule is packed. The Principal will either waive the gym teacher's requirements, or he/she will make a gym teacher stay after for her.

How Rude!!!!

Hi, not a teacher. . . but I wanted to say, that a lot of time they don't stay b/c they coach. In my HS, I think you had the option of coming in early if you missed a class.

ETA- yes call the principal--she needs to eat!

I'm not a teacher, but I would call the principal anyway pleading your daughter's case. Ask he or she what this is all about making up gym during your lunch period? Thats total bs Ron and Liz. Fight them on this!!!

I would say get a doctor's note and speak to the principal about it.
Perhaps the gym teachers have rules and regulations they've been instructed to follow and don't want to break the rules themselves...but an administrator should be able to help you out.
Good luck!
Hope your daughter is feeling better

call that Principal yet, Ron?!

I agree, get a doctor's note and call the principal. I used to teach and work as a HS counselor, and I found that often teachers did whatever the heck they wanted if they weren't questioned about it and they were intimidating. I realize that there is probably a requirement, but find it hard to beleive that there would be no exception for illnesses with a doctor's note. Good luck!

Call the principal and then the district if that does not work. That is not possible that there is NO other option. They can either make her do a report or they have to offer a zero period or something like that for her to make it up. They cannot take her lunch period. That's the most absurd thing I've ever heard. Good luck. Let us know what happens.

I am not a teacher but I remember when someone was out or couldn't play gym due to an indjury the gym teacher would make us write a report about something gym/sports related.

I WOULD not let her skip lunch. Definetly call the principal!

Ron, I'm not a teacher but I went through this in HS. Stay on top of it, and go to higehr ups if you can. I couldn't walk at graduation because I failed gym my senior year because I was out with shingles for a month!

IMO, that is unfair to your daughter. Can't she do a written assignment? The kids in my school sometimes have to research sport and health issues.

get a doctors note , call the higher ups, and threaten to call a lawyer if necessary, it is almost as if they are harassing her. This is not right nor is to fair. Let us know how it goes. Glad your daughter is over the flu.

Teacher said doctors note is to be excused from school not gym class. The class has to be made up. I checked, the teacher does not coach. I think this is the straw that breaks the camels back. It's time to home school!

Teacher is full of cr@p. The doctor can write a note excusing her from Gym. I've seen it done all the time!!!

Is this gym teacher old, overweight, and crotchety? Sounds like it...

What does that even mean, school not gym? That's the biggest load of bull I've ever heard. I would start with your daughter's guidance counselor. People don't realize but that's one of the things they're there for. If that doesn't work, move on up to the principal.

And to be honest, I'd get her moved out of this teacher's class. She sounds HORRENDOUS.

Glad your daughter's feeling better though!

So you have met her!

I can't say what I really think. I would have to ban myself!

I am not a teacher myself. DH teaches in HS and I will ask him tonight what he thinks.

IMO this sounds sooooooo absurd. I have never heard of such a thing. They should not stop a student from eating. This is wrong.

When I was in highschool and someone missed gym, they would either make us stay after school and make it up or make us come in earlier in the morning. But making you do it during lunch??? that's insane! I would go to the principal, F*** the gym teacher because he/she is a freaking moron. I would say to the principal 'when is my child supposed to eat lunch'....report them to the proper district or whoever, but they should be reported period. This sort of thing should not be going on. And if you don't like what the principal has to say well then you tell them that they'll be hearing from your lawyer. That's what I would do. And also bring the doctors's note with you, wherever you go.

I had many times myself when I was excused from gym. What about kids who have injuries and are well enough to be in school but can't do anything physical? Or kids who have conditions like asthma that can be aggravated by exercise?

Sounds like something my colleague calls 'Inverse Land', where everything is done in a manner that is opposite of what is logical.
