Teachers, I have a ?

Original post by LIWeddings

My daughter is in high school. She was out for two weeks with the flu (was really bad). Thus she missed gym. Gym teacher says there is no such thing as an excused absence for gym so she has to make up the classes. My daughter has no study halls. Gym teacher says she has to miss lunch to make up the classes. What! I want my daughter to eat and have a little break during the day. Teacher said no eating during gym class even in this case. So, what do you think? Call principal, district office..........................................

Also, I said she can stay after school. Gym teachers do not stay after!

When I was in high school I always had these problems...I was out sick a lot, asthma, upper respitory probmems associated with the asthma...and I remember hearing something about according to some NYS education requirement, a student must participate in a certain % of gym class. Even though I had MD notes, etc, I ended up skipping my lunch a few times to make up the class.

It is totally wrong, but I wasn't about to fight the system, I just wanted it done....but I do remember this situation very well...I went to Comsewogue.

Teacher said doctors note is to be excused from school not gym class. The class has to be made up. I checked, the teacher does not coach. I think this is the straw that breaks the camels back. It's time to home school!

Again, I would say talk to the principal and superintendent if necessary. Teachers make up their own class rules all the time and are often overruled by someone in authority.

I would not bother wasting time going through the counselors. I would go straight to the principal and if that accomplished nothing then to the district, and if necessary as a last resort, to a lawyer.

Oh no I would not sit back and let them do this to my child!

I would be in the principal's face everyday.

I had many times myself when I was excused from gym. What about kids who have injuries and are well enough to be in school but can't do anything physical? Or kids who have conditions like asthma that can be aggravated by exercise?
.

I think that may have been why my school had ' alternative gym' --they played pool, but I guess that counted.

I think the teacher is being ridiculous.

Get a copy of the doctor's note and forward it to the teacher, guidance counselor and principal.

Call the principal right away - that is ludicrous! By law, students have to be allowed to eat.

Re: Teachers, I have a ?

Our HS recently instituted a very strict attendance for credit policy... if you miss a certain number of classes, you fail the course... so it gets very sticky with phys ed... and that always threatens whether or not some kids graduate... however... official notes from doctors usually allow some of the absenses to become exempt... when kids loose credit from gym, the usually have to double up with it some time before graduation... not immediatley...

you NEED to call the principal... i would even go to a board meeting if the principal was no help!

eta: there is also a such thing as book gym... sometimes kids get hurt and cant participate in class... also sometimes students go on home tutoring for a bit because they get really sick, or something happens... so they get assigned book gym to make up the classes... usually have to do papers or something... ask about that option!!!

I work in a high school (and a middle school and an elementary!). I'd call the princial. She shouldn't miss lunch for this. The gym teacher is probably just enforcing this rule b/c she needs to attend gym class to get credit for gym to graduate. I had a student go through this recently too, but he had study halls to make it up during.

get a note from the MD saying that she cannot participate in gym - ask him to backdate it.

Next, call the Principal, and stress that she is a good student, doesn't have time for a studyhall because her schedule is packed. The Principal will either waive the gym teacher's requirements, or he/she will make a gym teacher stay after for her.

How Rude!!!!

I absolutely agree! As a matter of fact, when I was in H.S., as long as we had a Dr.'s note, we were given a portfolio assignment for each day we were not able to participate (it was generally an article and some questions about it for each day we needed to make up.)

There is absolutely NO WAY that a school district can hold your daughter responsible for making up these classes during her school day as long as you have a dr.'s note. An excused absence is one that is accompanied by a dr.'s note. As long as you have this you are fine- go to Principal immediately (and further up if necessary.) They will have to make accomodations for her before or after school or through alternate means (such as an assignment)

I've heard of make up gym during free periods or a half lunch period...your daughter MUST be allowed to eat lunch. I'd call the district to see what the policy is.

What if your daughter goes in to make it up before or after school? She should not have to miss lunch. Also, she may be able to do written work related to sports to make up for hours. I know when I broke my arm back in the day, I had to read newspaper articles, and write about that. They counted as my hours.

Your first step was to go through the teacher, and obviously that is not working. Is there any other teacher in the school who your daughter is close too? It is always a good idea to have an advocate on your side. Maybe the teacher can help your daughter. If not, go to the principal. But remain calm! Just tell the principal everything, and ask him to explain to you what the 'law' is.

I am an elementary teacher, but I know how some schools can ruin a childs education. My fiances sister missed 5 days of school when her father passed away unexpectantly. She had already missed some days prior to that because she was sick. In her school, you can only miss 12 classes before you are dropped from a course. The funeral was day 12, the day after, day 13. They dropped her from the class claiming that she very well could have come to school the day after she buried her father. I guess thankfully none of them had lost a parent at a young age, but to have no compassion, its terrible. She had to retake the class over the summer and could not graduate with her class.

did you persoanlly talk to the teacher? I would go to her first and see if you could clear it up with her. then i would take it to the next step and go to the principal and so on... I kjnow if a prent has a question or an issue. I would like them to come to me first before going to the principal...As a parent, I would be angry- doesnt seem fair.. a doctors note is legit..

I am an elementary teacher and I take children away from recesss for various reasons but under NO circumstances am I allowed to take away their priviledge to eat lunch. It's called corporal punishment and you should let the principal know ASAP that one of his taechers is practicing it. She will be in big trouble! Don't let this taecher get away with it.......

I think you should call someone. This seems a bit extreme. It is like they are punishing your daughter for having the flu. Maybe she could write a phys. ed topic related paper instead.

I would raise HE!L! That is so unfair! I am an elementary teacher and don't know the rules of HS, but this is WAY out of line! I do know that gym is mandated by the state and perhaps that's why they are being strict about this, but come on! She was SICK! Not cutting class!

Have you spoke to the Guidance Counselor? They will definately advocate for her. There is so something they can do.

Good Luck.

I don't think she can legally miss lunch either.

Gym has a mandatory amount of hours set by NYS...recreation, which is a part of lunch is counted towards this. I know there is no recreation period in HS, but lunch is nutritious and helps her concentrate better during the day. I would call the principal and if that didn't work, I'd get the superintendent on the phone!

Good luck!
Hope she's feeling better!

I agree. I teach at the high school level but i am not sure of the gym requirements. I know several students opt to not have lunch to take other classes but it is always THEIR choice. Forget the teacher...call the principal and if you do not get the response you want to hear, call the superintendent. Remember, adminstration would like to keep parents happy especially around budget time
