Teachers, I have a ?

Original post by LIWeddings

My daughter is in high school. She was out for two weeks with the flu (was really bad). Thus she missed gym. Gym teacher says there is no such thing as an excused absence for gym so she has to make up the classes. My daughter has no study halls. Gym teacher says she has to miss lunch to make up the classes. What! I want my daughter to eat and have a little break during the day. Teacher said no eating during gym class even in this case. So, what do you think? Call principal, district office..........................................

Also, I said she can stay after school. Gym teachers do not stay after!

I don't think she can legally miss lunch either.

You are right, legally she CANNOT be forced to miss lunch!!! If the teacher will not stay after school for make-ups, which I cannot believe, then ask if a report can be done in lieu of the activities.

I know there are a certain amount of days that they must participate in gym in order to pass but in my districts, reports are used when a student is unable to participate. I would also ABSOLUTELY call the principal about this teacher's attitude, that is completely unacceptable!

Good luck

I spoke with DH who is a Highschool teacher and he said that he has never heard of such a thing. He said to speak to the pricipal or to the head of your local school district.

Teacher said doctors note is to be excused from school not gym class. The class has to be made up. I checked, the teacher does not coach. I think this is the straw that breaks the camels back. It's time to home school!

What kind of crap is that?? She's supposed to come in with the flu and run track?? Sounds like time to call the board and file a complaint against this a$$ clown!!

I remember being in high school and kids who missed gym due to accidents because they had a broken leg or arm had to write a report if they missed class. Did they want her to actually just go in for gym while she was out with the flu??? How can it be acceptable for the other classes but not gym???

Print up this post and take it in to them.

I work in a HS, and I know that if you are unprepared 3 times, and absent 4 times w/o doctors note, you automatically fail. If your daughter was sick, and has a doctors note, I would definately call the principal and complain.
The phys ed. teacher sounds like an old grouch to me. I believe that by law they have to have lunch, unless they have a science lab., or don't want lunch and rather have service.

Re: Teachers, I have a ?

I am a phys ed teacher, taught middle last year and elementary this year...

I dont agree with the teachers. The problem is unfortunatelly we have to grade our students on participation because if we started giving tests like other teachers parents have a cow.. Being that she isnt there she hasnt participated and must make it up... Im just saying - thats probably what theyre thinking...

I dont think its right to give up lunch though... Personally if I have a student who is out for a while I have them write me a little essay on an article or something...

In the middle school they have to come while we have a class. If they come before and after school and theres no class theres nothing to participate in... We had an 11th period in Sayville which was optional. The students could go home early or stay for extra help and or makeups. That is a great idea.

I would get a doctors note and talk to the principal and see if maybe she can write a little essay instead or something... I just dont like taking away anyones lunch. IMO thats kinda cruel.

P.S. Dont say I said anything LOL

Re: Teachers, I have a ?

I would tell her to bring her lunch to the principle's office and eat in there....so the principle could see how ridiculous this is that the kid has to miss lunch.

Don't forget to leave crumbs...

Sorry Ron...I would totally call the principle.

When I was in high school...they made it mandatory for us to take 7 full periods (as a senior) the year I became a senior...this was ridiculous because I already had enough credits to graduate except for gym. So...I took some advanced classes in academics, but I refused to sign up for elective classes I had no interest in. The guidenance counselor insisted that I pick something...I told him to sign me up for whatever he wanted, because I wasn't going. So, along comes first day of school...and I don't go to my elective class (greek mythology....ewwww). Second and third day, no show for me. So, I get called to the principles office. I explained to the principle the same thing I explained to the guidance counselor...I'm not taking a stupid elective. He says I can't go on the senior trip or to the prom...I say ok, fine. He says he's going to call my mom...I say ok, fine. So, he calls my mom....my mom says...she is not taking a stupid elective class.

Long story short...I went to the prom, senior trip and had 2 lunch period's...no stupid elective.

CALL THE PRINCIPLE!!!!

Re: Teachers, I have a ?

I am a GC in a HS, and that is CRAZY!

I definatly would call the Dept. head, or Principal about this.

but...
1- have YOU tried to contact the teacher already? or given the PE teacher a note regarding her absence?

I konw in our school, if you are ABSENT you do not have to make up the PE class.

If you 'cut' the class then you do. (meanig, if you are in school, but just miss the PE class, then you have to make it up.)

This sounds a little 'off' to me.

I definatly would contact the school.

Good luck.
