Teachers I have so many questions:

Original post by SoontobeMrsH

Good Morning!

I have a few questions:

1. Is a Masters neccersary to teach?
2. Can you teach w/ any BA if a Master's isn't needed?

Thanks,

While we're on the topic. Is it true you can teach with any masters degree? Not just one in education? My mom told me this was true but I think she was drunk

It is true ONLY if your Undergrad degree is Education based.

Well, for example, I minored in education but am getting my masters in forensic psychology (which might apply to most public high schools anyway), does this mean I can teach without getting a masters in education?

AS long as you became certified through your Undergrad program. I majored in English and minored in Secondary Education in Undergrad. When I graduated, I already completed all my workshops and passed all 3 NYS exams. I started teaching at a HS on the Island 3 months after I graduated. In order to become permanently certified, meaning your teaching certificate cannot be taken away, and once you get tenure..your job is secured. However, you have 5 years to complete a Master's program. If you have the Education background, your Master's can be in anything you'd like.

You can teach with a Bachelor's, as long as you took Education as a major or minor. If you want to teach HS, you have to have a Bachelor's in a content area (example: English, Math etc...) and with a minor of Education. Once that is done, you have to pass all 3 NY State exams (LAST, ATS-W and CST). There are also workshops you have to go to ( I think there were 4 of them). You can teach for up to five years with this degree and other requirements. You need a Master's by your sixth year.

Thanks, after thinking about it for years, and not really knowing what I want to be when I grow up, I finally realized it (altho when my family was encouraging me to go in to this area 7 years ago I disagreed )

I've been out of school for a few years (unless you count cont. ed classes @ Post).

I did not take one education class Does anyone how how many /what credits are needed to take the above mentioned test?

What is your Undergrad Degree in and do you plan on teaching Elem. or HS?

Elementry, & my degree is Interdisiplinary Studies (International relations)

You'd have to take a whole Education program through and get a Master's in Early Childhood Education.

Can you explain>? Do I need to take the education program, before going back for my masters?

There should be a Master's program that will get you certified to teach....you can't teach anything unless you have some Education degree. If you don't get it as an Undergrad, you need to get it in Grad school to be able to teach. Does that help?

When i was applying to masters programs, I applied to adelphi and LIU for teaching. They're both pretty expensive though. You get the same education at queens college for much less $$$

The # of credits can vary depending on the school but I can average it between 30-40 credits.

you can teach with a BA, but only if it is in education. If you go for your masters in Education - because you BA was in something else (then you are done, you do not need to get another masters)

However, the teaching postions for elementary teachers are few and far between. We are in a time that most of the teachers are on the young side or older, but not yet ready for retirement. And it is becoming harder to find jobs in NYC as well

If you ahve an interest in another subject or if your BA is in something you can teacher. I would suggest looking into secondary education. Math and Science are fields that teachers are NEEDED in. People with those 2 degrees are finding jobs much quicker than anyone else.

Dont let this discourage you! Teaching is a great field to be in. GL

Once you are certified to teach in NYS, you then have 5 years to receive your master's...they changed it to 3 for a short time and realized that was crazy...so it's back to 5, thank God!

it took me 3 semesters I went full time 12 credits a semester. (the way it worked - but they may have changed it now was within each reg semester was 2 cycles so each cycle i took 6 credits - i went from 9 am to 5 pm every sunday) but then i was off a semester and did my student teaching over the summer. Even though I student taught for Elem ed i had to student teach for spec ed.

Since you will be doing education dont forget you will have to student teach as well.

Michelle...here is what I am doing...

I majored in Psychology in undergrad. Just graduated with a BA in Psych this May. Now I am going to be attending Hofstra in the fall and going for my masters.

The program I am in is Early Childhood/Special Education. I am getting a dual certification. I can teach birth through 2nd grade in general ed and in special ed. However at Hofstra since I do not have an education background (although I took 4 education classes in undergrad- they just didnt ahvea minor for me at my college) I am in the inclusive Early Childhood/Special Ed program. This means that I get my initial certification after completing 45-48 credits....and taking all the NYS exams (LAST, ATS-W and CST)

It might take me 2 full years hopefully less...but this si what you would be doing getting the initial certification but have to take more credits than someone who already has an education background

Does anyone know what school districts in Nassau you can sub in without your certification? I'm going back to school this fall for my master's in ed and want to get out of my current job in a year or so.

You can only sub for 40 days without certification. Also, you need to have fingerprinting done and filed with the state ed dept. They do this at BOCES in garden city...i think you can call and make an appointment to go. Any district that you are hired to sub in will send a request to the ed dept to verify that your fingerprinting is done and you can't sub until they get that info back. Keep in mind that this takes a few weeks, so I would definitly do this asap. FH had to wait a LONG time to start subbing because of all that fingerprinting BS.

dont take this the wrong way but i would not do b-2 only. Its hard enough to find a elem teaching job being cert n-6, you will be limiting yourself, unless you are willing and wanting to teach nursery school or something.
