I have a few questions:

1. Is a Masters neccersary to teach?
2. Can you teach w/ any BA if a Master's isn't needed?

Thanks,

Does anyone know what school districts in Nassau you can sub in without your certification? I'm going back to school this fall for my master's in ed and want to get out of my current job in a year or so.

You can only sub for 40 days without certification. Also, you need to have fingerprinting done and filed with the state ed dept. They do this at BOCES in garden city...i think you can call and make an appointment to go. Any district that you are hired to sub in will send a request to the ed dept to verify that your fingerprinting is done and you can't sub until they get that info back. Keep in mind that this takes a few weeks, so I would definitly do this asap. FH had to wait a LONG time to start subbing because of all that fingerprinting BS.

maybe that depends on the school.. i thought that was the case too.. but my bro who grad BS in Earth Science no education classes and was hired as a perm sub and worked all yr

YES! it helps tons, any suggestions on Masters Programs in Ed, locally (Long Island) ?

Touro College has Masters programs in Education and Special Ed. Also, FH is looking into a program offered by stony brook. It's a masters program that is completely online and you can earn a liberal arts masters degree that fulfills the NYS requirements for teacher certification. It's geared toward people who are working and trying to earn their degree....i just wish we knew how hard it is!

Michelle...here is what I am doing...

I majored in Psychology in undergrad. Just graduated with a BA in Psych this May. Now I am going to be attending Hofstra in the fall and going for my masters.

The program I am in is Early Childhood/Special Education. I am getting a dual certification. I can teach birth through 2nd grade in general ed and in special ed. However at Hofstra since I do not have an education background (although I took 4 education classes in undergrad- they just didnt ahvea minor for me at my college) I am in the inclusive Early Childhood/Special Ed program. This means that I get my initial certification after completing 45-48 credits....and taking all the NYS exams (LAST, ATS-W and CST)

It might take me 2 full years hopefully less...but this si what you would be doing getting the initial certification but have to take more credits than someone who already has an education background

HTH

dont take this the wrong way but i would not do b-2 only. Its hard enough to find a elem teaching job being cert n-6, you will be limiting yourself, unless you are willing and wanting to teach nursery school or something.

thanks. i dont take it the wrong way at all...my neighbor told me the same thing since she is an elementary school teacher. I am not sure as to what to do...I mean I don't really have the desire to teach children in the 4th or 5th or 6th grade. I really only wished to be a 1st grade teacher or a kindergarden teacher...and even go into peoples homes to work with their disabled children. I really loved working with children with disabilities- especially the younger ones when I was at the school....but now I am second guessing myself should I change and get a degree in Elem Ed instead??? It's such a hard decision haha

I know its hard esp the way they changed the certifications.. i htink its stupid that they split it. is it possible to get an advanced degree for like 15 more credits to get cert the other grades? I think i saw something like this in the Adelphi pamphlet. THe only thing i could suggest is.. if you look into NYC and get a job, even if it is a 5th grad position, you can choose the following year your 3 choices you could put down k, 1, 2 and they would have to give you 1 of those.

Dont second guess yourself, the state just really messed up with these cert's

I know when i was doing Spec ed they just changed it to 1-6 (why would they exclude K?? DUMB) anyway, and when i was applying for jobs the schools didnt even know the change, i was getting calls for high school postions because the cert used to be k-12

I just check the state website...i think we were both right on the 40 day thing. If you aren't certified, but are preparing to become certified you can sub for any length of time. if you aren't preparing to become certified, you can sub for only 40 days.

Just keep in mind that it is very difficult to get an intitial teaching job with a Master's degree. They have to pay you more and they don't want to.

Also, if you ever wanted to teach as an adjunct at a college you only need your masters in your subject.

yes i was able to work full time. I worked as a teaching assistant while i went to school.

Adelphi offered a sunday program. I think they still do but i think they changed it a little, not sure, youd have to look into it.

if you have any other ? just ask, not sure what else youd want to know about it

It focuses on language development, stuttering, articulation of speech, swallowing disorders and language impairment in people who had strokes or brain injury. It's extremely interesting and we work with people birth to 100 years old. You do need a masters but it's in the education dep't @ Post.. Thats where I graduated from
