Teachers need advice

Teachers need advice

I was told that I'm going to meet with the superintendent for a leave replacement job (1 year)-basically I have the job bc this is what I was told. However, I'm still waiting on another school district which told me they won't finish interviewing until the end of July. So do you have some time before you actually accept a position to decide. I would hate the throw away this opportunity, but at the same time I will kick myself if I am offered the other position. TIA!

Once you are offered the leave, after you meet with the supt, call the other district and tell them that you've gotten another offer but are still very interested in their district and have they come to any decisions. If they tell you no, you accept the leave, and then if you're offered the perm spot, you give notice to the leave spot. It's done all the time. Districts understand that someone is obviously going to take a perm spot over a leave.

well said Michal! don't pass up the leave b/c if nothing comes through at least you have that job and if you do get the perm position then you resign the leave.

Thanks so much! I was just worried that once I sign a contract I am stuck.

I would do what the others said, but just check to see what the contract says. Mine states that I have to give 60 days notice. But my district is probably the only one with such a ridiculous requirement! Good luck!

I would accept the leave and then if the offer of a perm job came along I would back out of the leave position. I backed out of one district's contract for a perm job for another district's perm job that I liked better. It was closer to my house and the money was better. They do understand. You have to do what's best for you!

Good point in knowing how much time the contract says you have to give for notice. I think most districts on LI say 30 days. So, if that other position let you know by the end of July you would be alright.

Wow that's great! think you should take the leave then of course take the other job if it is offered to you! Best of luck!

Last spring, I was offered a P/T position in my district and was presented with a contract to sign. It said I would need to give 90 days notice for resignation, or I would owe the district $2000!!!

$2000!!!!!! omg that is CRAZY!!!

My district is 30 days. Most are, or so I thought. They understand that you have a permantent job. I did the same thing. The original district offered to make me permanent, but beacuse of a lot of runaround, I took the second district anyway.

They do this to DETER you from finding another position over the summer and leaving them stranded to find your replacement. Some staff said you could get out of it if you really try.

If youre given the leave TAKE it, still go on the interview for full time and if you are offered that tell district #1 you got something better. Play the game.

Right, you need to do whats best for you. Unfortunatelly as much as they say were a family etc bla bla bla - were not. School is all politics. You are not safe until you have tenure and even then watch your back. my school tried to screw me sooo bad this year after I went ABOVE and BEYOND for them! My union fought them and won thank God. Its all politics and they'll be your best friend when they want something and once they have you, your just another #.

I hate to sound so grim but I hate administration. Theyre are so business and all I want to do is teach and be left alone!!

Once again, Do whats best for you and dont feel bad for not telling them everything.
