Anyone teach in one of these schools? Just curious! If so, share your experience. Im seriously considerding it. I think it would be a wonderful opportunity for me to 'give back' in an area that is in high need.

Re: TEACHERS OF TOMORROW PROGRAM
I did it, altohugh I was in a school that was in last stages of being in the program. honestly, most schools in the city are underperforming, so the types of schools within the program vary in terms of what makes them high need. i.e. some schools are violent, some are high immigrant populations, some have incompetent administration and teachers, etc. etc. so depending on what the issue is with the particular school is, that issue will shape your experience there.
i loved my experience in the city, and i loved getting $4,000 at the end of the year that i got to put towards my loans. i think you get the extra $4K for up to four years. I only was at that school for a year, so i onyl got it once.
GOOD LUCK. FM if you need/want more info.

Re: TEACHERS OF TOMORROW PROGRAM
I am no longer in the city... got a job on LI... more of what i wanted in terms of grade level...and the sharp increase in pay and the sharp decrease in my commute didn't hurt either.
I was at PS 8: the robert fulton school in brooklyn. i really liked it. www.ps8.org

Re: TEACHERS OF TOMORROW PROGRAM
FH is a teacher of tomorrow studying to complete his cert in administration. He has taught in East NY for the past 3 years in a middle school. The stories are rough, but if you are a confident strong person, I am sure you will do fine. It is just hard to hear some of the stories of poverty, violence, and other situations that here on the Island we don't seem to face as often. It is a big challenge!!!!!!!!!

Re: TEACHERS OF TOMORROW PROGRAM
I am not in the program, but I do teach in Brooklyn at PS 66. It is a good school, but in a rough neighborhood. The grade levels seem to have their fill of good and bad things. We have had kids bring in weapons, alcohol, etc.....but it is all in how you approach teaching. I pick my battles.....my FH teaches math and was in the fellows program (similar to teachers of tomorrow) he never had a problem and was in a pretty rough school....there are always gang issues. He has completed his commitment and is not going to work at Sachem, but he is glad that he worked in the city....

Re: TEACHERS OF TOMORROW PROGRAM
I do... but I only got the grant money for the first two years. I was supposed to get it after that, but I didn't for some reason. It can be rewarding, but it can also be frustrating. All you want to do is teach and help them, and many of them couldn't care less. It can be quite disheartening at times and you will second guess yourself all of the time. However, when you see teh progress, however little, that you ahve made, it is worth it.
ETA: My school is on the island, not the city.

Re: TEACHERS OF TOMORROW PROGRAM
my aunt did it - she ended up quitting - the school she was placed in didnt even have a copy machine (she was in east new york somewhere) and she was working long hours with the commute and the extra time the kids needed (she changed careers from being a lawyer to being a teacher so she would be home more)
I know someone else who did it that was going to school to be a high school history teacher and got switched to a school that needed a fifth grade teacher -
If you are willing to be flexible, i say go for it. especailly for that grant$$$
