that is how it works in my district too. sometimes they cover when a teacher is out or when he/she is in a meeting, etc.
what district is it in?

Good luck! Permanent subs have the perfect job. All the perks of teaching without the planning! Congrats on being selected ... you were picked from a million resumes I'm sure!

I've seen permanant subs before... its a good way to get into the district usually, although they don't always give you benefits... pay usually isn't terrific either...

Re: Teachers or substitute teachers help!
I was a permanent sub for a high school.
When I wasn't needed as a sub in a class I did hall duty/lunch duty/ and in-school suspension room duty.
Truth be told, I didn't like it. But I was in a high school. It wasn't the hall duty or lunch duty I minded. It was the 3 hours of in-school suspension duty that I couldn't stand.
Elem may be more enjoyable.
You'll probably be put on hall duty/lunch duty on the days you are not subbing. I did actual subbing literally about 50% of the time so that was good.
But don't take my experience as how it always is. I just did it at a time when I didn't really want to teach anymore anyway so my heart wasnt into it.
Good luck - I'm sure you'll enjoy it
Mary ETA: the pay was not bad (not great but I don't remember being put off by it) but I did get benefits.

Re: Teachers or substitute teachers help!
Actually, the permanent sub in my building (where I student taught) would go to each classroom and ask all of the teachers who needed extra help that day. She would schedule 40 minute slots for each teacher that needed help on days there was no teachers out. There were days she was bored, but she loved being able to be in all different grade levels to learn the curriculum and different disciplinary/teaching styles. Plus, she's the first person they'll look to when a position arises. I think it's a great gig. You'll probably get paid like $115/day or something. .. no beneifts.
