Teachers: Topics that are interesting for students to debate pros/cons of ...
So, in light of these protests that are going on, I think I want to do the 5th grade enrichment lesson on freedom of speech and the right to protest peacefully.... now I'm trying to think of topics that would engage the students. I want to have 4 groups of kids....
wondering if they could be ideas relevant to them as 5th graders or real life historical issues (women's right to vote; disability controversy and the Diebold machines)
I'll then have them divide up into pros/cons groups for each topic and create a picket sign, as well as a group spokesperson... a mini rally of sorts...
Thoughts, ideas? Please help! TIA :)

I would bring it down to their level. I.e. they could 'protest' what's being served in the cafeteria, or something that's of particular interest to them.

What about something about the internet. Maybe having regulations on it or parental involvement on the internet such as the idea of parents being able to see everything kids are doing online including their conversations. The internet is just so big with kids. Good luck fellow teacher!

One of my frieds taught fifth grade for years and this was one of her kids favorite projects...they argued pros and cons of hw, school rules, things like that. They always did a great job on it.
