Where should I go....I am going the cheap and fast route this time around!

Re: Teachers...Question about 2nd Cert
I have been teaching for 10 years. I have TWO permanent licenses. One is in Special Education and the other in Elementary Education. I HIGHLY and STRONGLY recommend to ANY new teacher or anyone looking to teach to get a second license. You MAY have to do student teaching again. I did student teaching in the same school for each certification. It depends on the program OR the state requirements. They have changed a lot since I have become permanent.
HOWEVER, you should inquire at the college and your workplace if they will allow you to use your current work environment as your student teaching placement. Some do. Some don't.

Re: Teachers...Question about 2nd Cert
Kathleen, I am currently taking administration courses towards a 2nd masters/cert. My school is paying for it & I'm doing classes online from St. Johns.
I know when I did my Masters that Hunter accepted student teaching in my current classroom.
I'd definitely check into city/state schools for the best prices.

Re: Teachers...Question about 2nd Cert
As of 2004 everything has changed. You should check the NY State Dept. of Ed website. You def. need to take the CST in your specialized area. In my grad school (adelphi) there is an option to do student teaching over the summer, so you would not have to quit your reg. position. There is also an option to do a practicum in your own classroom if you currently hold a certification... I am not really sure regarding all of the details. Some things are not available to everyone, it depends upon your standing. In my masters program, I noticed that there are various approaches based on your situation. I am pre-service so I am totally diff.
Regarding your school. I started my program in a Cuny school. I transfered to a private school only because of the schedule flexibility. I do regret this because I am paying $$$$$$$ more, and it is a hard pill to swallow when you add it up.
Hope that helps!!!!
edited to say my masters in dual -- special ed/elementary

Think about this. With 'no child left behind' there are more opportunities for special educators - especially with inclusion.
Personally, I think every teacher should have a stronger special education background.

so true....I also wanted to add that you can't go wrong with Literacy...with the ELA's, schools are investing in positions for Reading teachers/coaches.

Re: Teachers...Question about 2nd Cert
I am going for my Master's in TESOL (Teacher of English as a Second Language to Other Learners). It is strategies and skills for ESL students. I do not need to know how to speak Spanish or any other language. I changed from Special Ed to this because I got the job in Dual Lanugage in my building. In my district a TESOL lisence is golden. Plus, in case of anything it is much more marketable in other districts with a high population on minorities. PS I am changing schools since the grad school I am in now it CRAZY with the amount of work they require. I am going to a school in the city that does not require so much 'busy work' I have to teach too and grad school is feeling like undergrad work.

Re: Teachers...Question about 2nd Cert
I got a 2nd certification in Reading, and I didn't have to student teach, just do practicums which required working one on one with a student, nothing in the classroom.

For spec ed you will prob have to student teach. When i go tmy rdg certification, i had to do a practicum after school. I went to Hofstra. EXPENSIVE but i LOVED their program

Re: Teachers...Question about 2nd Cert
I would call BOCES and ask about this.
I got my cert in ADMIN/SUPERVIOSIION - no student teaching but rather a rather long and arduous internship.
You may have to log hours of some sort.
Best of luck! It is tough out there and a 2nd cert always makes u more marketable. (I'm secondary ed/Eng which is pretty popular too)

Great! If they telll you something specific (no student teaching, etc)- make sure you get it in writing.

Re: Teachers...Question about 2nd Cert
I have 2 permanent certs...elem ed and special ed. I got the elem ed first then went back part time and got the spec ed. I had to student teach for special ed over the summer since I was laready working as a classroom teacher full time during the year. . It wasn't bad.

Re: Teachers...Question about 2nd Cert
i have 2 permanent certifications--elem and reading.
make sure that you would be willing to teach the subject that you'll be getting your 2nd cert in. you have no idea how many people get sp ed cert and never want to do it!! that doesn't make you very marketable if you won't teach the subject.
you don't have to student teach for reading but i don't know about sp ed.
BTW, i work in a sp ed class (blended) as the gen ed teacher so if you have any questions, let me know
