My favorites are really liberal animal rights and environmental ones. Since that can get really political, here are some others that I've supported in the past:

World Wildlife Fund
St. Jude's
American Cancer Society

Just throwing this idea out there...since this IS a LI message board, any ideas on local charities? I know of a bunch of no-kill shelters. Or maybe one that benefits local children? I think someone did a bake sale recently where the money went to a cause for hunger on LI...?
(Since we may do two donations, maybe one to a larger, more well-known and then one to a local cause?)

it was the 'Great American Bake Sale' and it was a HUGE success,I know Lauren's (laurenandmike618) sister i believe is doing another go at it in November...i CANT wait!

Leukemia and Lymphonia Society

I participate in their Canine's for a Cure walk... They really have some great fundraisers and their overhead is very low... a large percentage of what they raise actually goes to the charity and not administrative fees.

I'd also like to support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. My brother was diagnosed about 8 years ago when he was 12.

thats a good idea.....I was thinking maybe North Shore Animal League or a more local Animal Shelter....or maybe some women organizations like there has to be one for battered women.

I love the idea of supporting both a national and a local charity.

For a local charity, I would love to support the Suffolk County charity for domestic violence. One of the attorneys that I work for is the head director or something on the board of directors.

ok well im about anything to do with cancer or children...

but I DO like the idea of a local charity....

so i think ill wait til its narrowed down and then vote....

there are so many

but basically, children, cancer, local.....

sorry crashing..i know im not on ths vote or going to te shower

but as a aunt of an autistic child i can tell u how bad the schools and the programs need all the help and support they can get

Suggestion...if you're going to go with two donations - one local and one national/international...maybe group it into categories of types of charities to donate to and vote on that. Once a category wins, then vote on the actual charity.

Does that makes sense?

For example, everyone votes on a category like Medical, Hunger, Children, Animals.

Say Medical wins.

Then open the vote to the various organizations: American Heart Association, Susan G. Komen, etc. etc. etc.

And then everyone votes on the actual charity for the money to go to.

MADD- my MOH lost her best friend bc of a drunk driver (happened on long island)

NYCares - I volunteer with them and they help all kinds of people and even animals

this is true...YAP is young autism program that we can make as a local donation to the DDI facilities on long island...my sorority and other organizations at my college have supported them in the past...
