I have to tell you, I have a big problem with these alert levels. I don't think they mean a damn thing. And to go further....if they can pick up on chatter, then don't you think terrorists know that by now? And who's to say that chatter talking about New York isn't really code for Los Angeles? I mean, I'm sure they talk in code and what not, but I just find it to be a little too good to be true that they can pick up on all of that stuff, yet still have not time frame. If there's no time frame, then why tell us now? I just don't think that we need to know the minutia of it all. If there's a threat, then the government and the city needs to take care of it. We can't do anything about it. What's a higher alert level going to do to the average New Yorker? I think we're all pretty aware and to plant seeds in people's minds can only cause stress over somethign we can't really do a damn thing about. Argh, sorry to vent here, but their 'specific' information didn't seem any more specific than anything else they've ever said.
i agree with this -- my feeling is that any 'intelligence' that makes the news is not intelligence - the terrorists don't give warnings

no offense, but there are always people saying 'don't let it get to you, etc'......i personally feel nauseous every time i go into nyc for work. this is a big country and if i can find a job in NJ closer to my home that is not a terrorist target, that's what i am going to do! it's a feeling i really can't explain, i just know that i don't want to be there anymore. that's all.
I totally understand. I was SO relieved when FH moved out of his apartment in Manhattan- I would have been a nervous wreck now if he was still living there.

Exactly! I feel like the media really makes out on the state of the world these days. What better way to get people to pay attention than to play on all their fears and concerns of their personal safety? It's an all time low in media.

Yeah but don't you think that terrorism can happen anywhere??? I guess my theory is that they are going to do the unexpected! Where and when. Why not drop some bio/chem weapon on the NJ turnpike??? Hey not too many people would expect that! I guess after watching our airplanes fly through buildings in NYC...i think they are capable of just about anything, especially the unexpected!!!

This is exactly why these stupid alerts annoy me. As if the terrorists don't know to listen to the news. I'm sure they're highly intelligent or they'd be caught already, so I'm sure they can easily devise a plan of saying they're going to do one thing, but really planning on doing another. I'm just aggravated over this today. Not that no one should ever worry, but to be worried about specific targets can be a tireless mind game that will NEVER end. SOmething can happen anywhere and at anytime and we will never know it's coming.

I guess I just look at it this way. I have had two brothers killed in car accidents before either were 21 years old and still get in a car. I am not going to live in fear of what might happen. If I am going to die tomorrow at least I hope to be doing something I love. I understand the fear, but I also think that it is exactly what the government wants to happen.

I just feel like they're trying to promote aculture of fear. If we're afraid, we'll give up our constitutional rights one by one, we won't notice that our economy is bad, etc etc. Also, what sense does it really make to name all these buildings. Isn't it better to not say anything so the terrorists don't know that you know what they're up to, so you can catch them? It amkes NO sense to frighten people, unless you're trying to push your political agenda. Intelligence wise, it really makes no sense. We've never had this before where the CIA and FBI broadcast their findings on every news station. It simply doens't make sense. I admit, I just found it sort of weird that this comes out today, and FH starts his job in the financial sector tomorrow. but still, we won't live in fear. The most you can do is pray about it, lobby your politicians to put some better solutions in place (perhas as per the 9/11 commission report) and get to the polls on nov 2 and vote for whoevere you think will protect you, your family, your interests, your freedoms and the US constitution the most.

i also believe that the terrorists are not planning anything -- after 9/11, they don't have to -- all they have to do is make you think they are and everyone goes nuts.
They want to screw with the political system and the election, I wouldn't be surprised if this was a ploy to get everyone so scared that they cancel the convention

Re: TError ALert on High now!
According to AMNY- they found detailed drawings and reports about very specific details about these buildigns. They found analysis of how many pedestrians are on the street at specific times and how to get into the buildings.
I think there is some good chatter- they picked up a major player in Pakistan this week. Although I agree with you, a lot of this stuff is bull sh*t, I would prefer that they were aware and let us know something than not.
Remember, there was a lot of chatter before 9/11 and they didnt' do anything. ALthough these terror alerts may scare people (me included), I would rather be scared and have nothing happen than not worry and be hit by terrorists.

no i don't think it will happen just anywhere. there needs to be a lot of people and ideally there needs to be some tangible effect on the economy. so if you're in the middle of iowa or something i'd say your relatively safe. and correct me if i'm wrong but didn't we have intelligence saying the terrorists were thinking of using airplanes? so it wasn't really unexpected it's just that no one told us.
also i think the reason they broadcast the news is so that they can beef up the security outside those buildings and on mass transit and stuff w/o people panicking. kind of counter intuitive, but how would you feel if you showed up to work and all of sudden there were tons of cops patrolling and barriers erected but no one would tell you why. that would freak people out more i think.
yes, they're trying to promote a culture of fear but also of awareness. they want people to look around more, report unattended bags and stuff and just be aware. not necessarily a bad idea.

Re: TError ALert on High now!
It's a lose/lose situation in the end. We want to be informed, but we don't want to be scared into paying attention to news stations that are fighting for ratings. I think people need to learn how to filter the things they read and hear. Like yesterday during the Bloomberg media conference. I was trying to make sense at one point of what the police commissioner was saying, and I realized he was talking so fast, repeating the same words and making no sense. And all I could think was that somewhere, there were tons of people getting freaked out over what he was saying, and HE WASN'T EVEN MAKING SENSE! And I still maintain that a terrorist group would DEFINITELY 'plot' one attack while really planning on attacking somewhere else. IT's like the bait and switch. I just suggest REALLY listening to what the news says....are they REALLY giving you information, or just making you THINK they have information?
This is not to say that none of this freaks me out. You will not see me frolicking through NYC with my eyes closed and a smile on my face, I am just not going to avoid my life for the POSSIBILITY of something terrible happening. For example....I go to a lot of Yankee games....what better place to take down than a place with 50K+ people at one time? Well, I can't worry about it or I'd go crazy.

Re: TError ALert on High now!
Yeah I can see people going crazy right now. I mean the possiblities ar eendless about attacks. Police check points are good but there are many areas where it wont help. Same goes for Airlines, etc. People could be working at companies for years under a facade and be the terrorist..getting co-workrs trust etc..even at the airport I have seen people let pilots thru simply becasue they 'know them' and not checking their badge..HA..
Not trying to scare but show that being alert is the best way to approach life..no need to stop living it.

Re: TError ALert on High now!
I was very unnerved when I heard the latest news on all this, then I pick up NEWSDAY this morning and see my cousin on the front page protecting the CITIGROUP building, I was so proud of him, just really worried @ the same time. I have a lot of family involved in all this, as I'm sure we all do. BUT worrying is not going to stop the terrorists-and getting ourselves sick over it is not going to accomplish ANYTHING. so just be informed, but aware of your surroundings and PRAY PRAY PRAY. and don't watch too many news shows today--they THRIVE on this crap to scare people.
