What is the etiquette for sending thank you cards to people who can't come to the wedding but send a gift? Should we send a card right away or wait until we get our thank you's with the picture?

Also, should we cash their checks now or wait until after the wedding?

I am sending a thank you now and if I have more, another one after the wedding. I plan on cashing the checks as soon as I send out the thank yous
