Re: Thatched Cottage Brides
HI-I have my wedding booked at TC for Oct. We are pulling out. How can you risk it? I just read on newsday again tonight an interesting article. Any bride trying to get their money back really wont get it back. We are only possibly going to get 2600 out of the 5000 most of us have down already. If you even want to fight for that 2600 you have to file paperwork in the courts. The weddings are the last people to get money back after he pays off the debt he is in. Also, did you receive notification that this was going to be happening? We didn't. We received a letter today 1/24 when it broke on the news 1/13 and was filed publically 1/2. I found that very upsetting. Also, we met with the owner and while people on here said they felt reassured, I felt completely opposite. I felt worse after talking with the owner. There are sooooo many places on LI to get married, I'm sure if you google it you will find a whole bunch if you want to that you can check out. A lot of places we called were very understanding about the situation and lowered prices for us. Good luck with whatever you decide to do!!!

Read the article today 1/23 that came out on Newsday about getting your money back..... They are basically saying its not going to happen :( There is a public hearing scheduled for 2/7. I think I am going to go and see what is said.

The contract with TC says if you're within 8 months of the date of the wedding you're not entitled to getting your money back. Since your wedding is in October, I don't think you should have a problem since your contract says you're entitled to a refund. It's hard to make blanket statements about every bride getting married there because every bride is at a different point in her contract. I'm 4 months away so I'd lose all of my deposit at this point. Newspapers love to cause panic! *sigh* Good luck!

Re: Thatched Cottage Brides
I got a letter before this went public. He did send notifications out, I know someone who just got married there and everything went great nothing but great reviews. Other catering halls have filed chapter 11 and are still open and no one knew. Everyone has their own opinion. I'm nervous but my fiancé and I listened to all the details. I'm just gonna keep calling. We paid $5000 and I'm less than 7 months away so I don't have that money to throw away. When the owner told me not to pay him anymore more until a couple of days before the wedding I was good with that. I just know personally I'd be really upset if I canceled and they were running at the time of my wedding bc I've seen many halls before picking TC and this is what we wanted. Best of luck to everyone.

After reading that article it seems pretty obvious that the owner of thatched is a straight up thief. He stole $40,000 in deposits from 8 brides and is now hiding behind bankruptcy laws and not honoring their contracts. To some $5000 might not seem like much but these poor couples may need that money to book another venue. It's sad how this is playing out.
What article is this??

apparently the contract they signed states that they will lost their deposit if they cancel sooner than 8 months before their event. this couple's event was in august which is 7 months out, so they probably won't get their 5k deposit back. They signed the contract saying they were okay with it, so it's technically their fault on that one

I understand everyone is stressed and upset, but can we please stop throwing accusations around? I'm sure there's some shady business going on, but like I've been saying, we'll never know the full, true story. It honestly isn't helpful to the TC brides who are within the 8 month date and stuck to their contract. People were going to cancel their reception regardless of the reason TC went bankrupt. Things will play out the way they will play out and all the TC brides will make the best decisions for themselves based on the time to their weddings and what they can afford.

Yes, you're right. I have a contract with TC and it does state that if you cancel within 8 months of the event, you lose your deposit. It also states that you're entitled to a refund if you have more than 8 months so these stories with people not getting deposits back is because they're trying to break their contract. As long as TC states they're holding their events, the contract stands.

But yet the contract doesn't stand if you cancel more than eight months out? You have all the right to defend yourself for staying. But you don't get to be upset that there are brides out there, well within their rights to cancel as per their contract, that are stating facts. They lost their money even though their contract states otherwise. That is extremely sad. They have every right, just as you do to voice their frustrations.

No, as I mentioned if you cancel more than 8 months out the contract states you're entitled to have your deposit refunded. If there are girls out there more than 8 months out trying to get their money back then I 100% agree that's wrong and they should fight! I never asked another bride not to state her opinion or frustrations. I've been saying all along that everyone has a right to be stressed and upset. I simply asked that the accusations stop. In speaking with other TC brides, I've never tried to convince anyone to stay. I've also been saying all along that I'm not blindly defending TC and that each bride needs to do what's best for her. Also, please don't tell me what I can and can't get upset about. I'm not on these boards to argue with people. We really are all on the same side here and I do appreciate you keeping the boards updated with what you know.

I agree with you and I'm sorry if I offended you. I meant no ill will. My sister is one of the brides that cancelled within her contractural rights so the issue is near to my heart....as it is yours. I apologize.

I am freaked out myself about the whole situation, but I am trying to remain positive. I had no plans of trying to leave TC (as I love it!) but even if I did, I am way too close to my wedding for that!

Exactly. I can understand being upset about everything, but if you are choosing to leave with less than 8 months to go, then YOU are breaking your contract. So while I understand people panicking and wanting out, you can't really blame TC for not giving you your deposit back when you signed a contract where that was clearly stated.
