Tellers and The Elbow Room. The Elbow Room is out east and I don't know if you wanted to travel out there. Its a small place but the food is excellent.

Re: the best restaurant on long island?
For steak - I would choose - Peter Lugers, Mortons (over Ruth Chris), Smith and Wollenskys (in the city), Angelo and Maxies (also in the city)
Not steakhouses but have meat on their menus - if money is not an object - on LI - Mill River Inn, city - gotham bar and grill

Re: the best restaurant on long island?
Not to offend anyone at all .. but even if someone told me money was no object, I'd still feel weird about asking someone to take me to dinner at these kinds of places .. I'd be saying, Boulder Creek! But, that's just me.
Anyway .. just to repeat what was already said ..
Peter Luger's is CASH ONLY
Of Peter Luger (Great Neck) and Ruth's Chris (Roosevelt Field Mall).. I've found both very good .. at Luger's .. there is very little elbow room .. it's much easier to get comfortable at Ruth's Chris.
Its lunch time and you are all talking about steaks... (gurgle gurgle shhh tummy)
I vote for Peter Lugers too.

The Club House in Huntington is a great steakhouse...If you feel like going all the way out east, I would have to say The Palm is amazing for a steak!

Re: the best restaurant on long island?
If you folks are ever looking for something good - there is a TINY (and I mean TINY) little place in St. James called the Kitchen. The atmosphere is... well, different (very casual - it's one room with maybe 10 tables, if that, and you can see right into where they are cooking the food - none of the silverwear/glasses/etc match) but the food is UNBELIEVABLE! And the prices are fantastic. (They don't have a liquor license though, so it's byob - they'll provide a corkscrew and stuff for your own wine)

Re: the best restaurant on long island?
definitely Peter Lugers in Brooklyn!! but make sure you make a reservation... i booked over a month in advance and the earliest time slot i could get was 9:45.
second choice: Mark Joseph steakhouse in Manhattan... not very well-known (i think the Luger's name outshines it, even though MJ steak gives Luger's a run for its money) but a GEM of a place near south street seaport... they have a beautiful old oak bar, too.

My favorite restaurant on Long Island is 'The Rose Hunt Room' at the Fox Hollow.
The filet mignon w/ blue cheese is scrumptious and I LOVE the olive bread!!!

My favorite restaurant on LI is Mill River Inn in Oyster Bay. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but once inside, the service is excellent and food is outstanding!!!
It was rated in Zagat's a few yrs in a row as best on LI too.

I vote for Tellers in Islip. I took DH there for his birthday and it was amazing.
We went there for our office holiday party and they basically kicked us out. THey asked us to get up from the table and they'd set up an area in the bar. We weren't even done eating dessert. I think the food was good but only remember being asked to leave basically.

I think that steak is steak and once you get to that Ruth Chris's, Lugers, Bryant&Coopers, it's hard to distiguish what's better, because they're ALL really good.
That being said, I would go with Tellers because I like the ambiance there.

Morton's is the best!! It's in Great Neck I think near Leaonard's.
