The cost of this wedding is KILLING us!

The cost of this wedding is KILLING us!

We cut corners left and right...got the minimum for every vendor in any way possible and with the amount of ppl (about 220) we are really doing well.
BUT I can't afford ANYTHING! I can't even drive anywhere cause gas! This economy is killing me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's something to think about...
My parents bought their house for $40,000. They both worked and made $50.000 between the 2 of them. NOW, a couple would have to bring in AT LEAST $700,000 to live like they did almost 30 years ago. There is something terribly wrong with that.

i am TOTALLY with you on this!!! It's insane!!! I am sooo proud of myself for the way I saved on this wedding - just shopping around and finding the best prices, cutting corners where i can, etc. But still I'm just barely gonna make it with paying for everything. Of course that means i have NO LIFE whatsoever!!! Very limited on gas, groceries, etc. It's horrible. I can't wait until this wedding is over and i begin living like a normal person again.

my dad always says how their first house cost them $48,000...and this was in the 80's....not that long ago....now that house would go for a good 350-400,000......................it's seriously disturbing and me and my fh are realizing that owning a house is not a possibility anytime soon..it's really sad. I always wanted a large family but in this economy..that isn't possible anymore.

i totally feel the same way you do... FH and I want a house and we know theres no way for a couple years that we will be able to afford one.... both our parents bought their houses in the '70s for like chum change compated to what they go for now a days I feel I have to count pennies in order to put gas in the tank which *****

Me and FH talk about this all the time. It's ridiculous that with our combined incomes, we make 6 figures and that's not enough for just a regular house in a regular neighborhood on long island. Forget a new car and vacations! I drive around in some of these neighborhoods and always wonder how everyone does it. Unfortunately, this whole economic downturn is gonna hurt all of us getting married in the next few years because no one will lend unless you have perfect credit.

We just got a house in Jan of this year in east meadow. We put down 25% and mortgage is still 3000- a month (including taxes) but then we need an oil delivery like every other month which has been running another $1000-
plus all other utilites. It's crazzzzzzzzzzy!!

I agree with all you girls. It's really quite sad. My FH and I have no life. I couldn't tell you the last time we saw a movie or went out for a nice dinner. We want to of course but we try and put anything extra to help for the wedding. We are getting help from both our parents, which helps, but it doesn't cover everything.

We hate renting---but really don't know when we can get a house. It really *****. I have perfect credit but he doesn't---he has a great salary--but I don't. It really *****. I feel you girls.

i totally hear you... i had a good laugh when my mother told me she paid $22/pp at for her wedding!
i am cutting some corners as well in order to try and save up. we may not be able to buy a house right away but someday we will, just gotta keep on saving.

i think THIS is CRAZY....

my grandmother purchased her home in smithtown in the 1950's... she put $10 DOWN on it and bought it for about $15,000. Now her home is worth about 1/2 million dollars. Do you believe that?!?!?!

Consider yourself lucky because the way the economy is going you need to put 40% down. madness

My Mom paid $25 per COUPLE at Leonard's when she married my Dad. I only wish it could be that cheap now!

I also agree. I am not doing the little things and have cut costs where we could for the wedding but I am still soooo curious those of you saying you cut corners ...
how much will the wedding still cost?
I also have had many conversations with FH about cost. We made a promise when we made the decision to have a 'traditional' wedding instead of destination or dinner that we would not spend the time focusing on teh negative. We are no expecting to 'break-even' at all.

I really feel like Long Island is such an ideal place to live. Close to the beaches, close to the city, there is diversity and culture, but no one can afford it. My FH and I talk about this constantly. As much as I love Long Island I can't see buying a home here to be indebted to the insane property taxes and outrageous utility costs. Its true its hard to make the make money elsewhere in the country but your bills are much lower. My FMIL lives in NC, and yes its very different living but there are starter homes (there is no such thing as starter homes here). , Even condos here are ridiculously expensive and you have no property....I wish things would change but especially with this economy I can't see that happening.

Here are ways I cut corners:
DIY invites
November Sat afternoon (BIG savings)
Low CPs/no church flowers/no boutennie
Seperate photo/Video-documentary style was cheaper
Making my own album/parent albums/thank you's
No cake upgrade or RH upgrades
Researched all little things (rb pillow, shoes, DOJ, bm gifts etc) EBAY for much less
Negotiated with all vendors

All of the $$ I saved from doing these things added up to thousands in savings

Can you send me a pic of your DIY invites. I am trying to cut corners as much as I can!

in Colorado things are soooooo much cheaper than they are here, and that's where we'll be for the about a year. I just get afraid of never returning 'home' since it's nearly impossible to live here. We don't wanna rent either, so chances of owning a house here on the Island seem pretty slim. Such a pain. I don't know what we'll do.
