The dangers of Myspace!!!

Well my curiosity got the best of me again and I am now paying the price...

My students were talking during my Solar System lesson today and went on a tangent into who has a Myspace account.
Well I decided to search their names to see if they were bs'ing me or not and it turns out the one who was talking the most does....BUT it states he is 17 years old.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? He's 9!!!!! Im glad the profile was set to private- i can only imagine what else he has on there!

13 year old FBIL has one too. It's scary what these kids write and post-his age is listed at 19!!!!! Come on-this is just retarded. If you look at the pics-these kids don't look the ages they are posting. I agree it is a pedophile's play ground.

my sister is on there.. she's 12. she originally had it at 15. the things i read i was crying like how she wants a boyfriend and all of this stuff.. her pics. i couldnt take it. i had to be the tattle tale and call my mom. i felt bad and i dont want her to not trust in me in the future, but i feel like she could get in trouble in the future

they did a skit on this on SNL this week [i have no idea if it was old or new] and they were all ina
night class to learn how to use myspace. all the men were makign themselves 15 and stuff and being pervs meanwhile julia louis dreyfus [sp?] was being naive and telling all this info about her daughter and her myspace page and the guys were like jotting down the info!

it was HILARIOUS yet oddly REALISTIC. if kids are smart enough to LIE about their ages [to be older], then don't you think creepy adults are smart enough to do the same [tp appear younger to victims]? all the 'teacher' kept saying while he'd be 'puzzled' over theri bizarre and/or obviously wrong information was 'myspace has no way of policing this....'

I caught the tale end of that.. and when the cops came in EVERYONE bolted and the fat guy hid behind the plant.. it was funny but it wasn't..

The reason they lie is because you have to be at least 13 to agree to the registration agreement. My 12/13/14 and 16 year old nieces and nephews all have pages.

I had my own page setup because there were people hotlinking to pictures from their myspace page so I had to register to send them a message and tell them to stop.

But when I saw that my 14 year old niece had her CELLPHONE number published on her page, I went to her mother. She also had her town listed and numerous pictures of herself and her friends.

And yes, she also purposely misspells things and uses profanity frequently; it's the 'cool' thing to do. I've warned her about the dangers of appearing stupid to fit in, she knows. She would just rather be seen as one of the crowd than be seen as smart at this point though. Sigh.

Only one of these kids has her profile set to private. The rest are public for anyone to see.

I sound calm, don't I? I'm not. It freaks me out to no end. But I am on their friends lists, they are on mine, and I keep an eye on them. I tell them or I tell their parents when there's something worrisome on there.

I find it irresponsible that my sisters and brother in laws are not monitoring this stuff themselves.

WOW...Im horrified that this is happening all over the place.

Kids have no clue what they are getting themselves into do they?

My DH has two little sisters, they are 13 and 15. I have the 13 year old on my friend list, but the 15 year old won't even let us SEE her page. It is set as private and she has her last name as a different last name. The profile picture makes me nervous, I swear!
