The difference (calligraphy versus label)

Original post by suven

I'm NOT trying to be a jerk, it's just that I've seen it posted A LOT where people want to know if it's a big deal to do calligraphy, hand write, computer print, or do labels on invites.

I am not posting my opinion, but here are 2 invitations that we recently received.

I am hardly in competetion with anyone in regard to making or planning a wedding. I am the last of my friends and cousins to get married. I think that everyone is entitled to do as they see fit for their own wedding. There are those people who see having engraved invitations and hand calligraphy as unnecessary, obnoxious or pretentious. There are plenty of people, myself included, that feel they are part of the vision of THEIR ideal wedding. If MY idea of setting the tone for a formal wedding is an engraved invitation with hand calligraphy on the inside and outside envelopes, is pretentious, then honk my hooters I am one heck of a snob.

toot toot!!!!!!!!!!

HEY! I AM GETTING MARRIED! KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF MY HOOTERS!!! (Not like there is much to honk anyway)

Invitations dont have to calligraphy on it...nice handwritting would be sufficent...computer generated envelopes look good too.

IMO, I think labels even clear ones, belong on more informal events

I chose to do what I am doing with our wedding for us,, not anyone else.

Isn't that REALLY the key to it all though?

Do what makes YOU HAPPY and what works for YOU!

It's not about what I want!! I didn't mean it that way, I meant it was about whatever the couple wants for their wedding!! We all have different opinions...I happen to agree with yours!

haha...i have no idea what thread you're referring to, i guess i missed it. it would be interesting though because, from a teacher's stand point, you NEVER put 'and' in a number. we always have to correct the kids with that.

wish i had seen it.

sorry to hijack. back to original thread.

It shouldn't be so much about whether or not the envelope goes into the garbage...as much as it is about first impressions. IMO.

damn skippy!

Hmmm don't start! That was the problem! Both ways (when referring to a date spelled out, such as in an invite) are correct and it got ugly...'no, it should never have 'and', 'yes, it should always have and', 'etiquette books say with and', 'grammar books say no and'...

For the record...I don't think suven meant to make anyone person (label, hand calligraphy, computer) feel worse or better than the other...she simply posted 'here's a picture of two envelopes, can you tell the difference?'...how that turned into this, wow! No one was judging anyone's personal taste, budget or style...if anything, it helps those that think a label and computer printing is OK, just as good or not for them...or those who think hand calligraphy is a waste or the only way to go. If you care about this sort of thing (and not everyone does!) then you would get to see firsthand, in black and white, side by side what the difference, if anything is aesthetically...
ETA: She even wrote 'I am not posting my own opinion'...leaving it up to the reader of the thread to observe and decide...as quietly or loudly (as shown in this thread) as they wanted.
I think with planning comes a lot of emotions and heated debates are common since you feel emotionally connected to a lot of your choices, but in the grand scheme of things once you're done planning you won't care about envelopes...trust me. So remember that when writing to each other since this is a great support system and the girls here are probably one of the very few 'real people' who would carry on such a lengthy 'conversation' about the truly important thing, such as calligraphy on an outer envelope!
