The Economy and our Weddings-

Original post by Kimbalina

So I was surprised to say the least when my God Mother who lives less than 2 hours away in Poughkeepsie did not show up for my shower...
I was hurt and angry especially because she never called to say sorry that she didnt come or send a note or nothing.
Now yesterday we find out that the 7 people from Poughkeepsie are NOT coming to the wedding because the economy is bad and they said gas is too expensive.

that's horrible! Pougkeepsie isn't that far, can't they car pool?

Please!! that is what I said!! It would take MAYBE 2 tanks of gas.. They work Monday to Friday, they would not be losing any time at work and could stay at a relatives house here (which they have done before). SO... all in all 7 people = 2 tanks of gas and less than $20 in tolls.

NO GIFT NEEDED

So sorry to hear that.

Have you spoken to her about it, explained to her how much it would mean if they came and to please not get you a gift, as well as offering up your familie's home for them to spend the night,

That was my P.C. answer but being the devil's advocate I am pissed for you bc Poughkeepsie is NOT THAT FAR. They can freaking take the Metro North if need be.

Especially for your god child!! I mean they both work and have really good jobs. I feel like it is an excuse. I would rather they come and give no gift at all if that is an option for them.

Also they can stay over night at our families house as we always do for events.
I feel like it is an excuse.

Im sorry If they both have good jobs I cant imagine that gas is a vaild reason for not coming...maybe something else is going on that they dont want to burden you with before your wedding (dont want to scare you sorry if i did) but that seems like an odd excuse from your godmother if they have good jobs

that ridiculous considering gas prices are down right now i mean you dont know what prices will be the day of your wedding but still, they have dropped....

im wondering if people arent going to come because of the economy - but im not really too worried - i think if anything we might get less in gifts but i dont think its going to stop anyone who PLANNED on coming.....people who didnt want to come from the start may use it as an excuse but i dont think people who WANT to be there are going to all of a sudden not come....KWIM?

yah, gas prices are expected to DROP within the next few weeks since the bail out package wasnt passed (aka the economy is going to crash like a ton of bricks - even further)

i wish I could be there freaking work

That's kind of depressing, I don't like when people say they can't do something because gas is too expensive. Just seems weird to me. Sorry to hear that.

Where are your shower pix?

I never got around to posting.. weird!!
when i go home tonight I will,

I am bummed that they knew about the wedding for 18 months and she is important to me. I know we can't make people come.. i am just sad that they will not being coming for the wedding.

Kim I can't possibly tell you how many people aren't coming b/c of the money issue. I even said, so come and don't give me a gift, I'm paying anyway b/c i'm under the min. and they said 'oh I wouldn't feel right'. I'll never understand how you've known for over a year and you can't find a way. It's very upsetting.

Re: The Economy and our Weddings-

honestly if we didn't book our wedding and had it all ready and it was during this time of crisis we would of done something completely different and our budget of 15k would of been even smaller. I am thinking the 2010 brides should be scaling down their wedding budgets a bit because its kinda sickening to spend all this money when things are starting and will get bad.

thats BS ...you mean to tell me from the time they got the save the date to the time of the shower or wedding they couldn't save $40???

I'm sorry u have to go through this kim...i had to pay for my brothers plane ticket...and my father almost wasnt going to make it because of money too...i don't get it...if they had saved a $1 a day since they got the STD or since i got engaged...they could have had more than enough to get here and back. makes me mad.

i think some people are just a-holes and i think a lot of people are selfish and have the money to give you a gift and to get there, they just rather not so they can spend it on themselves - b/c thats just how some people roll....i know that people are like that, people are greedy it ***** BUT i pretty much know who is generous and who isn't when it comes to family and friends - you learn this once you have an eparty and shower, some people shock you in a good way and other people shock you in a bad way

I agree!
The thing that gets me is that I have made an effort to go to as many Christenings, graduations, birthday parties and such as I could up there... all of a sudden things chanced. It is a PIA!!!

Thank you for making me feel better ladies!! It is a big help!
