~~~~The Late-parent thread.~~~~~
I don't mean to make this sound morbid but i've realize that there are a lot of us on here who have a deceased parent. Tons of questions come up about invitation wording, memory candles, who's walking who down the aisle and others.
Also, at a time like this it kind of reminds all of us of our specific situations so if we could all help one another that would be great too.
At a wedding this weekend it really hit FH that his father will not be around to see him get married. Lets not talk about how i felt during the father daughter dance. It s-u-c-k-s. Knowing i'm not alone does make it better though!
I didnt loose a parent, but I lost a sibling.
I am concentrating on the positive and the good, and what my sister would have wanted. To be happy and have a great day.
I hope you have the best day and I am so so sorry for your loss.
DH lost his father, grandparents, aunt and uncle and I lost grandparents and cousins so in order to remember them all here is what we did:
1. We put all of their names in our program with the Irish Blessing above it and had their names read out during the ceremony
2. DH lit a memory candle at the beginning of the mass and dedicated the mass to him
3. At the RH, I bought a memory vase which had a cute little poem on it and had 11 red roses and 1 pink one. The roses represented all those family members who passed. The pink one was for my cousin who passed. We chose not to put all their pics up bc honestly its sad but we wouldnt have had enough room for them all.
4. Our DJ did a photo slide show and we included a few pics of us with those who had passed.
I hope this helps you girls out!
I lost my mom in 2007 and planning this wedding has been really tough on top of already missing her everyday. My FH lost his father when he was 10.
I am putting a picture charm on my bouquet and my sisters bouquet. I ordered them from an Etsy dealer and they came out so nice.
I am also adding the following to my ceremony. It will be the very first thing Pastor April says after she tells everyone to turn off their electronic devices:
“It is Nicole and Joseph’s wish that as we get started today you all join with them in a moment to remember Joseph’s Father Jim and Nicole’s Mother Christine.
I thought of you with love today but that is nothing new
I thought about you yesterday and days before that too,
I think of you in silence I often speak your name
All I have are memories and your picture in a frame
Your memory is my keepsake with which I’ll never part
God has you in His keeping I have you in my heart.
May they know that they are loved, and remembered always.”
I didn't lose a parent, but my FH's mom has passed. He has been to many weddings but the most recent we went to he really got choked up during the Mother-Son- Dance. It was finally real for him. I had no words for him all I could do is hug him.
He has a bunch of ideas how to remember her. We are having a memory candle in her name as well as a poem and a picture of her will be printed in the programs. He has decided to dance with his Aunt although can't find the right song.
Maybe they can dance to a song from his mom's favorite artist?
I think this is a great thread..I lost my grandma, father and sister so I have many questions.
Hate the thought of a father/daughter dance (though I may dance with my mom) haven't decided yet.
Finally realized how to word the invite (even though FH & I are paying for the entire weddinh)
The Late (dad's name) and (mom's name)
Definately doing bouquet charms ( I found this idea on LIW)
Thanks for the ideas.. I love that prayer... not sure we would be able to get through it being said aloud but I think it would be nice in the program!
Thank you for doing this! FH's father passed away, and we intend to honor him, as well as a cousin of mine and a very good friend of mine that passed.
I lost my mother and father and grandmother to breast cancer and two other grandparents from old age. Im an only child. My Uncle (my dad's sisters husband) is my god father. do you think he should walk me down the aisle or my grandpa (dad's dad) (I don't get along with him very well) or walk alone? I even saw the other day that the bride walked down the aisle with her bridesmaids by her side and behind her.
Also, i want to incoperate my mom's wedding gown somehow into my wedding. any suggestions?
I last my dad in 2005 and there are times when I am planning my wedding that it makes me very sad he won't be able to be there in person.
My mom is going to walk me down the aisle
Had a bouquet charm made with his picture
I think in the invitation i will say the late and my dad's name
His name will be in the program along with the poem some one else mention on here. He will also be mention during the service
There are several mantles at my RH and his pictures will be placed on them along with the flag we got from his funeral.. He love fire places so it s very fitting
Some how doing a slide show with pictures of me and him to a song we would have danced to. Haven't figured that all out yet
Hiring a dance troop that so does Irish step inhis honor.
My brother got married in 06 and he did a slide show with pictures of my dad while a drum and pipe band played( My dad loved everything irish)
There was not a dry eye in the whole place.
Even though I am crying while reading every ones ideas I think its a great thread
I lost my father when i was six. i also lost all of my grandparents and a close friend.
we did afew things to honor them...
in the ceremony, we named the deceased and who they were to us, during the prayer of the faithful.
they were also metioned in our programs witha beautiful poem.
at the reception, i had their wedding pix included in our wedding pix display.
dh and i walked in to eye of the tiger.. a special song for me and my dad
we had a photobooth and on the table i put a framed pic of me & my dad in a photobooth
during dinner we had a montage honoring them all, it also had pix of me & dh, and our friends & family
on our cd favor, i put the song, i loved her first - whih is the song we wouldve danced too
and of course, i had a bouk charm
sounds like alot of stuff, but it wasnt over the top.
it was a tough day for me.
If there are any sheer pieces you could have it made into a veil..if it's big enough.
Or if you were willing to cut some you can have it made into a hanky, garter or to wrap your bouquet
I lost my dad at 13. My mom is going to walk me down the aisle. I could ask my godfather to do the father-daughter dance with me, but I don't think i could do it. We will put his name in the program and maybe mention it in the prayer of the faithful. we will also have pictures at the RH.
You could take a piece of her dress and make it into a hanker chief and pin it to your dress.. but that would mean cutting her dress... maybe you could use a hidden layer of the dress to cut from.
I love the vase idea and also thought of doing a bouquet with the proper number of flowers...one for each person that passed (we have alot between the two of us also). Can I ask why did you do all red and then just one pink? What is this significance?
If Roses grow in Heaven,
Lord please pick a bunch for me,
Place them in my Mother's arms
And tell her they're from me.
Tell her I love her and miss her,
And when she turns to smile,
Place a kiss upon her cheek
And hold her for awhile.
Because remembering her is easy,
I do it every day,
But there's an ache within my heart
Because I am missing her today.
I set this table, though I know you are unable...
To physically be here with us today.
Your spirits are here at this table...
Looking so beautiful...in the only way,
We forever remember you within our hearts.
Please know that we miss you ever so much...
We would love nothing more than to feel your touch...
As we , on this day, become husband and wife,
Please save a place for us in your 'New Life'.
We love you, always and forever.
Just came across these. I thought it was nice.
I just want to say thanks for creating this thread. Although of course it is sad i think it is helpful that we can share ideas based on our situation.
I lost my father, mother, and grandparents. My FH just lost his grandfather this summer as well.
Our hall has a fireplace so I am just thinking of grabbing photos from the house and having them on the mantle during the reception.
my color theme is also blue (moms fave color) and yellow (dads fave color).
I have been most confused about who to give me away. I can't decide if it should be my brother or my uncle who has been like a father figure to me. I think I will dance to Unforgettable by Nat King Cole with my brother for what would typically be the 'dad-daughter' dance.
If it helps i'm having my great uncle (my dad's uncle) walk me half way down the aisle. My uncle (dad's BIL) will be waiting there for me and will take me the rest of the way to FH. Or you could have them both walk you down. The aisle at my church isn't wide enough for this.
I lost my mother in June of 2007. What I decided to do was the charm on bouquet. I'm also doing a donation to the American Cancer Society instead of favors that people throw away. She lost her battle to leukemia, so I wanted to give back.
This whole entire process has been albeit fun but sad because she won't be able to enjoy this with me. It's weird to say but she was my biggest fan, the one who was most proud of my accomplishments, the one who cheered me up when I didn't succeed. I wish everyday that she was here with me.
I know many of you feel the same, not having that person to talk to when all of the frustrations of everyday life, especially planning a wedding, gets to you. My mother was my best friend and not getting to share this with her, breaks me into pieces.
