I lost my father in 2005, and it was such a bitter sweet moment when I got engaged. I was so happy, but I couldn't help but be sad that my father was not there to celebrate with us.
I definately plan to incorporate my father into the invitations and the ceremony.
I haven't decided whether my mother or my god father will walk me down the aisle. My mom said she thinks it may be too emotional for her, but I guess we'll see as we get closer to the wedding.
Thanks for making this thread. I think it will definately be helpful to share ideas, that will help us honor those who are no longer with us.

Re: ~~~~The Late-parent thread.~~~~~
I am thinking of doing a memorial candle for my father, he passed away when I was an infant. I lost my Grandfather a few years ago, not doing anything for him....
My mother is alive, but she will be unable to make the wedding due to her health. I havent figured out a way to honor her and include her in the wedding, we were going to try video conferencing, but I dont know if the Physical Therapy center she is in has internet or not :(

Maybe you can get a laptop for her to watch it on..or see if your videographer can make a short clip to show her the next day

My FH father passed away 3 years ago. He had a really hard time the night before he proposed. I'm not sure what/how we're going to remember his yet at the ceremony, but I think we are going to begin our invites 'with their parents' then our names.

Re: ~~~~The Late-parent thread.~~~~~
I lost my mom in April and planning this wedding without her has been harder than I ever imagined.
I'm definitely doing the bo-k charm for me and my sister, and her name is going to be on the invitations somehow. We're also going to have a memorial candle.
During the ceremony I'm going to leave a seat next to my dad empty and I'm going to either see if I can breakaway part of my bo-k and place it on her seat, or get separate flowers to place there. I think I got that idea from someone here.

I lost my mother and father and grandmother to breast cancer and two other grandparents from old age. Im an only child. My Uncle (my dad's sisters husband) is my god father. do you think he should walk me down the aisle or my grandpa (dad's dad) (I don't get along with him very well) or walk alone? I even saw the other day that the bride walked down the aisle with her bridesmaids by her side and behind her.
Also, i want to incoperate my mom's wedding gown somehow into my wedding. any suggestions?
If there are any sheer pieces you could have it made into a veil..if it's big enough.
Or if you were willing to cut some you can have it made into a hanky, garter or to wrap your bouquet
You could take a piece of her dress (maybe from inner layer if you don't want to ruin it) and sew it into the hem of your dress.

I didnt loose a parent, but I lost a sibling.
I am concentrating on the positive and the good, and what my sister would have wanted. To be happy and have a great day.
I hope you have the best day and I am so so sorry for your loss.
I love your new avatar!

I just want to say thanks for creating this thread. Although of course it is sad i think it is helpful that we can share ideas based on our situation.
I lost my father, mother, and grandparents. My FH just lost his grandfather this summer as well.
Our hall has a fireplace so I am just thinking of grabbing photos from the house and having them on the mantle during the reception.
my color theme is also blue (moms fave color) and yellow (dads fave color).
I have been most confused about who to give me away. I can't decide if it should be my brother or my uncle who has been like a father figure to me. I think I will dance to Unforgettable by Nat King Cole with my brother for what would typically be the 'dad-daughter' dance.
I was really torn about who should give me away as well. Initially I asked my godfather who said yes but then was unable to make the wedding (he lives in Florida) due to his son's surgery several days before. I then asked my stepfather, whom I adore but my mother has only been married to him for four years or so . My mother was hell bent on walking me which was an idea that I didn't like from the traditional Catholic point of view. Two days before the wedding I decided to walk myself, and the morning of the wedding we decided that I would walk 2/3 of the way and then DH walked over and walked me the rest of the way. I think I made the right decision and several guests and family told me that they liked what we did.
We nixed the parent dances because I couldn't deal with it and DH didn't want to.

Thanks so much for sharing! I think what you did was a great idea, and I am definitely considering this now. My other consideration is having both my uncles walk me down as long as we have a wide enough aisle. I think I amy also just do a dance with my brother, he's my only sibling and I want him to have a special role.

Re: ~~~~The Late-parent thread.~~~~~
Thanks for starting the thread - it was really interesting to read, but by far took the most energy.
I lost my mom in 2005, and while time helps, planning this wedding without her has been tough. She was one of my best friends and I don't know what I'm going to do without her there. Excited, but almost dreading, dress shopping. Bittersweet day FH proposed, as it was the anniversary of her passing; he wanted me to have a happy memory of that day.
Definitely trying to find some way to bring her personality into the wedding and keep the memory alive but without it turning into a memorial. Really like the charm in the bouquet idea.
Thanks to everyone for responding, it's oddly comforting to know that there are others going through the same thing.

I've lost my dad, stepdad, brother and both set of grandparents. FH lost his parents and grandparents. We are doing the memorial candle and vase both will come from rexcraft.com. For the ceremony I will walk alone and 1/2 half way FH will meet me and we will walk together. We are not the dances, but we will list everyone in the program and a poem. We were thinking of an up beat song from the 60s or 70s since everyone who had past away would remember that era and make it a family dance.

those who did or are doing memory candles.

My dad didn't die, he took off and I don't speak to him or anyone from his family. It's really difficult.

I don't mean to make this sound morbid but i've realize that there are a lot of us on here who have a deceased parent. Tons of questions come up about invitation wording, memory candles, who's walking who down the aisle and others.
Also, at a time like this it kind of reminds all of us of our specific situations so if we could all help one another that would be great too.
At a wedding this weekend it really hit FH that his father will not be around to see him get married. Lets not talk about how i felt during the father daughter dance. It s-u-c-k-s. Knowing i'm not alone does make it better though!
Great thread....
There have been many times recently when I catch myself thinking about my father (who passed away 5 yrs ago)....I seriously can't believe he won;t be there to watch me get married...It breaks my heart. But I HAVE to try and think that he will be there, like he is every day-watching over me....
