**The OFFICIAL IBS THREAD**

Original post by davenjess

I know the first time I saw this topic talked about on here I was overwhelmed to know that I wasn't the only person on earth suffering with IBS.

I have heard from a few other girls on FM asking about this topic - so I thought i'd make an official thread about it.

Come here to talk about new meds you are on, foods you've had success with, etc.

I'm Jess - I have IBS-D & it S U C K S!!!!!!

Hey Jess....i mentioned before on this thread that my FH has ulcerative collitis...he has been having a flare up for almost three months now....he tried Remicade but his body rejected the infusions. He is going to try another drug but if that doesnt work the dr said he may have to have his colon removed...just like your friend from work. :o( My FH is so scared! I feel so helpless sometimes cause ther isnt anything I can do to make him feel better! Anyways when you get a chance FM me..we would like to get a 2nd opinion!

wow...his whole colon? or a portion of it? I had a small portion removed and it wasn't that bad...I didn't need a 'bag'...Remicaide is as strong as it gets....def. hug for that one

I alwasy think there is value for a second opinion

We should put together an official list of easily accessible bathrooms on long island for all the ibs girls!

funny that you say that. some people at my school started this a few years ago:

http://www.wubathrooms.com/

I have my own code system... 'A' (pee) 'B' (poo) 'C' (puke) 'D' (err.... D)

You have problem with naseua and vomitting?

My Dr's told me it had NOTHING to do with Crohn's and they had no clue why I was having problems

So yesterday wasn't a bad day but wasn't a good day. FH and I went into the city and I was determined NOT to go on the train....so we get to Penn station and the bathroom's are CLOSED....I started to freak out since my tummy was acting up. Thankfully some of the restaurants in there have them though open to patrons and we 'snuck' into Friday's.

I dont have a problem with nausea/vomiting but that's the ABCD bathroom code Fh and I use. I do get carsick if I read or look down in the car, but I rarely throw up from it. Has nothing to do with my Crohns though. I sometimes get nauceous from anxiety, but only rarely. ie: the morning of a big exam and i might dry heave or feel sick to my stomach. I found that if I get up really early I can't eat carbs/normal breakfast foods or it makes it worse. However, if I eat protein (turkey meatballs, leftovers, eggs) the nausea goes away and I feel better. Again, think that's just anxiety and not Crohns.

One of the first things my dr told me when I was diagnosed was to keep a low carb diet high protein diet...i don't remember exactly why but its supposed to help with Crohn's.

That's interesting! My doctor basically told me that everyone has their own manifestation of the disease, so that I should just try things bit by bit and see what bothers me and what doesn't. I see it as there being 2 kinds of foods.

1. The type that can potentially irritate my digestive system, might make me feel crappy or pain, but won't cause a blockage and will eventually pass. (caffeine, spicy food, greasy food, alcohol, etc)

2. the type that can potentially cause an intestinal blockage or partial blockage, make me REALLY sick, send me back to the hospital, cause me to be admitted, etc and even potentially lead to surgery.

I can experiment with type 1 with my discretion, but type 2 can be really dangerous so I shouldn't mess with it.

(Again, I have Crohns IBD rather than IBS, and have scar tissue in one part of my intenstine from when my appendix ruptured due to the Crohns. I know some people with Crohns have surgeries/resections/etc and might have the same scar tissue issue. not sure if it affects IBS people at all. I'm supposed to avoid things that you don't digest like raw celery, corn, etc)

Bluegreen- I think you are my 'Crohn's mate' :) ...I had a small bowel resection a couple of years ago...but the damn thing grew back...nice right? This is a great thread...helpful...glad I finally saw it

Re: **The OFFICIAL IBS THREAD**

I have had stomach issues for as long as I can remember. I have had every test imaginable and everything came up neg except one test. Did anyone ever have a gastic empty test? It is the weirdest test in the world, you actually go on an empty stomach (fasting) and eat one reg egg and one radioactive egg that you should not get on yourself and you eat with a glove! The test takes pictures over the next hour as the egg moves through your system. I have delayed gastic emptying. On avg, you should digest your food at least 50 percent/hr, I am at 30 percent. It is recommended I eat 6 small meals day. My dr recently did blood to test for IBS. I find if I go for awhile without eating I get nausous and start dry heaving (not pregnant). Does anyone else get that? I get severe pains in my stomach that I need to lay fetal and rock. FH can also tell when it is bad. I am finding that Motrin helps to some degree and see some foods like cheese that bother me. It is best to keep a journal of the foods you eat. Last year, I ate Kielbasa with the skin off and I thought we were going to the hospital, I was so bad for about 3 hours. My dad had the iliostomy and it runs in my family.

I have the same issue with having an empty stomach & becoming sick shortly after. It is the worst if I eat an early dinner. The next morning I wake up with such stomach sickness I could almost swear I'm pregnant.. It is AWFUL.. As I sit here I have outrageous stomach pains. I have been on & off sleeping since 8am.. It is unbearable at times

the kind where i am home and doing nothing and then i cant go to save my life ( literally ) but the moment i am somewhere public i have to go immediately

yup that's the one I'm talking about. I think this contributes to the anxiety we talked about before. I get anxiety when I have to leave the house because I'm scared of an 'incident'. Does that happen to you?

yes! but then when i am home and i cant go it has gotten to the point where my parents want to take me to the hospital it hurts so bad

fun.

but it took me THREE tries to go dress shopping - returning home twice and then detour to my cousin's house once

OMG..this is so my life....it's the worst ever and i feel so bad for FH because I constantly ruin our plans bc i am stuck in the bathroom and get so nervous...Who else HATES having to go out to eat?

This used to be a common problem. Now, thankfully, my crohn's is under control. It's the other parts of my body that it has affected that are still giving me trouble (joints, eyes, kidney stones)... It eventually does get better though!

I do. It's terrible. It's hard to explain to people why you can't go out to dinner. Unless they have the same thing as you no one really understands.

it took YEARS for dave to stop asking, 'are you okay?'...when i was gone for more than 15 minutes at dinner. I had to explain to him that by him asking it just called attention to how long i was gone and that made me feel worse...

It is NOT easy - but i will be honest - i had no idea i wasn't alone in this until someone mentioned it on this site and i started this thread!

OMG

About the bathroom thing I have taught myself tricks so it won't be that bad....flush during....stiffles noise and smell ....and I carry matches around with me....

I have learned that in order to enjoy life ...I had to find ways to fit Chrons into my life and not allow it to dictate and control it. One of the reasons I am marrying FH is because he has accepted me and everything that comes with me (including the disgusting moments )....I am pretty stable with meds now but I have my moments....

All you girls that are suffering still...there are plenty of medications for IBS and IBD ..make sure you see a good gastro doc and always get a second opinion if you are not happy with the results.

Re: **The OFFICIAL IBS THREAD**

It is funny that we were talking about this and I got sick again today. If I sleep in, without eating, it is bad. I decided I need to sleep and took the day to do it. Well I woke up so sick that I spent the afternoon with an intense headache and vomitting. I ended up sleeping most of the day away. This happened to me 2 weeks ago after a nap. I know I should have snack bars with me or something. I guess in the future I will ask FH to wake me up before he goes to work and eat something then go back to sleep. I was given meds but they make me so sleepy I can't handle them. I am generally bad with meds. My FSIL has Crohn's and I am thankful I don't have that, seeing what she goes through is worse than me.
