The reason churches charge so much. . .

The reason churches charge so much. . .

My preist told us on Sunday that it costs about $4,000 a month to heat the church. And its not a huge church!

She was telling us this, because sheasked that if we were making a donation it be to the fuel fund.
This church doesn't have a set fee for weddings. . . I'm starting to think they should.

This is a little Episcopal church, they don't have a huge Congregation, & they don't have a lot of weddings.

We are going to see how much we can reasonably give, but it seems like it is such a smallamount, comapred to all their expenses.

I have to dish out $600 for my church. My only problem is that they shouldnt call it a donation if Im required to pay it.

My parish prints out how much they spend on 'overhead' (gas and lighting) each month in the bulletin. I forget how much offhand but I remember it being alot and much more than $4K a month.

Sorry, I know people are touchy about church donation/fees,I didn't want to start that conversation again.

I just couldn't fathom how this place even stays open.

I'd be happy to pay what they requested, but this place leavesit open.I hope other people getting married there don't take advantageof them becauseof that.

I'm sure total overhead is more that 4K, that's just heat.

I think they have to call it a donation to maintain'Non- Profit'status.

The church doesn't even pay taxes. They aren't hurting for cash.

My priest has told us that the 'donation' to get married is $650..........but then told us, that the altar boys get tipped, so does the organist, and soloist, sheeeeshhhhhhhhh.

Ok, so the church has bills. That still doesn't explain why I'm paying $750 for officiants (priest and rabbi) to come to my hall and $1000 just to have my ceremony at the hall!

I think that is a very broad and quite frankly an unfounded statement. Many places of worship are hurting for cash. Quite a few historical churches in NY have closed because fo a severe lack of funding. Even though they do not pay the same taxes as we do, they still have a tremendous amount of overhead.

The rabbi and officiant's $750 fee or the hall's fee do not have anything to do with a church's bill. It is alot of money to pay for the officiants, I totally agree with you there.

we have to pay 500 for ours plus 150 for the organist then 100 i think for the vocalist.

what would the church do if people didn't have the $.

i want to get married in a church so we'll pay it but they said to 'budget' for them!

Um, I would like to add that I just did the math of what my church rakes in a MONTH for weddings (since I know they were booked every mass and every weekend last year, he showed me the book!) and they raked in PER MONTH......13,000 BUCKS! That's roughly 150,000 A YEAR! I think that is completely and ridiculously terrible. 150K TAX FREE. AND the front of the church looks disgusting, for that kind of money, you'd think they could slap a coat of paint on it or something. I know I sound a little bitter, but I have other issues with the church and this just fuels my fire.

I will happily pay whatever donation that the church requires because the ceremony means the most to me. Remember you don't have to get married at a church JMO

I agree with you!!! It is more difficult to get married in a church (especially if you have to do pre-cana).

The $400 we are giving my church to marry us is the best money we've ever spent.

Re: The reason churches charge so much. . .

I have to be honest, as much as the ceremony IS the most important part of my day, that doesn't give the church the right to demand a specific amount of money from me then call it a donation to get out of paying taxes. Harsh, yes, reality, yes. That's just the way I see it. And I can tell you this, too....had our church not demanded a certain amount of money, we would have given them more than what they asked anyway. I know they're allowing me to use their church, but technically, it's MY church, too, so I don't feel to bad feeling this way about it.

I'm with you 121502.

My church wants a $500 'donation' and I have to pay the organist $200 even if I hire someone else and she does nothing! I think it is ridiculous !
