It's not my definition, it's the AMA's (American Medical Academy), this is the defintion the top doc's in the US have come up with. we debated this as well and one of the docs stressed 'no enjoyment and an inability to have no insight into performing any ADLs'.
Well i'll tell ya this..according to that definition half of my clients can be considered to have poor quality of life and possibly subject to death!
So although there is a definition out there...imo it really can not be used functionally with the human race when putting someone to death is the subject!
It's not 'putting' someone to death...If it is assisted suicide its that person's choice.
I very much believe in in assisted suicide

So you believe that anyone who wants to die can be assisted in this?

I believe that is has to be very well documented that this was the person's wish otherwise every person who committed a murder would say 'What, I was just assisting suicide.'

that is my point...
comming up with the definition or shold i say criteria of when it is acceptable to make this decision...
In the case of Terry...did she really make that decision or did her husband?
Or should it be her family?
I am not saying in her case that she shouldn't pass on
But i look at that as being different...they are taking extra ordinary means to keep her alive...she can't live without that tube!

I am going to speak about me here...but I don't want my parents making any decisions about me. I mean don't get me wrong, I love and adore my parents, but Darren is my husband and its his call.
The whole thing could become a he said she said.
EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE WRITTEN LVING WILL! If you are reading this and don't have one....GO GET ONE MADE AND DOCUMENTED!
You know I must be serious because I am shouting and we all know how I feel about using those caps.

I believe that people with terminal illnesses who are suffering or those 'living' in a vegetative state should have the right to end their suffering.
when would that be though
my aunt has cancer..that can be terminal...should she be able to legally end her life?
At what point to they get to die?
When they find out?
When they start suffering?
WHen they can't make decisions on their own?
TO many unanswerable questions imo
I should have been more specific about what I meant. I meant those people who are hospice care...treatment is pretty much over and the doctors are just trying to help them manage pain and prepare for death.
I agree with lilmrs...having a living will is really important. I haven't reallly thought about it until now, but I think I'm going to talk to brad about it. I know I would HATE to be kept alive only through the use of machines. I would want my family's suffering to end.
