The time has come...

The time has come...

to have my wisdom teeth pulled. I've been in pain for days, and it got a lot worse today. I just got home from the dentist. The wisdom teeth on the bottom are impacted and the gum is infected so tomorrow I have a consultation appt. with an oral surgeon. The sucker has to come out. I'm happy its coming out, but terrified at the same time.

Don't worry...I had 6 wisdom teeth...yes, 6! It's like a one in a million thing...all taken out at once...back when i was about 19.
They knock you out...you wake up drugged. They give you more drugs for home...you rest...take more drugs...and next thing you know it's better in a few days. I remember going to the mall that day and out to a friend's that night...which i wasn't supposed to really do...but oh well. It'll be fine....so don't stress...I am someone who is terrified of dentists too...

were yours impacted though?

Re: The time has come...

i had all four pulled

they were impacted

it was the worst experience of my life

i'm sorry but i can't lie to you, it was awful

however, the silver lining: i'm the ONLY one i know (out of a lot of people) who had as bad of an experience. my dr thought that it was mostly b/c they were not only impacted (beneath my gum AND jaw bone!!!) but that nerves were growing into them-- one of the major concerns was that if he did not get them out asap that i would have nerve damage leaving me w/ no feeling in my jaw/chin region.

the recovery was awful and it was weeks before i was eating anything close to food-- meaning, it took me about 2.5 weeks just to eat a milk shake or something really soft...

the other silver lining: GREAT for my diet, i lost like 12 pounds (when i really didn't have much to lose to begin with) it was awesome!

i became really good at just swallowing soft things whole b/c i couldn't chew-- like a baby bird

you'll get through it-- no matter how bad!!

ETA: forgot about the swelling and ralphing-- i was like a chipmunk and bruised and i threw up for like 2 days after b/c of the anesthetics (sp?)

Re: The time has come...

I had all 4 teeth impacted and pulled at once and man oh man!! I looked horrible(chipmunk face), but after a few days the swelling went down. Not once did I complain really and I actually lost some weight because I couldn't eat anything chewy for a while. I stuck with milk shakes, mashed potatoes, etc...
I got knocked out and when I woke up I was a little drugged. After I went home from the surgery, got some vicodin and passed out for a while. You'll be fine and good luck!

I remember having my wisdom teeth pulled

Pain will be gone in a week or so, and you'll have plenty of pain killers to get you through that week

Re: The time has come...

I too had all four wisdom teeth pulled last Halloween(No candy that year!) and 3 of the four were impacted. I have to say that It was not that bad. I had an amazing surgeon who was very gentle-- I was not even put under anesthesia, only given valium which of course made me sleep through half the procedure. My problem was the painkillers they give you afterward made me nausious, so i stopped taking them after the first couple of pills, so i roughed it and was fine the day after. I didnt have any bruising and very little swelling. I hope you are as lucky as I was. So sorry to hear what some of the experiences you girls have had-- I guess you never know until it happens-- Good luck!!!!!!

I had two pulled at once and then the third pulled on its own. All of them were impacted. The first one I was awake for and it sucked. They also gave me crappy drugs after. The second time I had 2 pulled. It was a breeze. No pain what so ever. They knocked me out and after they gave me steroids and pain killers. The steroids kept the sweeling down and the painkillers are self explanatory. anyhoo make sure you go to a reputable place. ask friends where they went and how it was. All my siblings and sibling in law went after me at the second place and all had great experiences too. Good luck and feel better.

Re: The time has come...

I have the worse impacted wisdom teeth I think my dentist has ever seen. He basically has told me, if it does not bother you, leave it because it is a major surgery.

I had 1 emergency one taken out about a year ago. I woke up at 2am hysterical crying and the dentist opened at 6am for me.

It's better you just do it and get it over and done with.

Aww dont worry! In May I had all 4 pulled at once and it was no big deal... ppl scared me by saying all kinds of horrific things but it was nothing like they said!! Just have plenty of soup broth and apple sauce. You might have trouble eating solid foods for a little while.

Oh you'll be ok. I've had two done at a time. You're just sore for a few days. The plus side for me was I actually lost weight, because I couldn't eat solid foods for a bit. LOL!!!

I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled at once. I really wasn't in that much pain. I ate a lot of soft foods. Make sure to apply a lot of ice. And ask for pain killers. The only thing, my face was very swollen and black and blue. My brother told me I looked like Monica from Friends when she wore the fat suit.
