The times are changing...

The times are changing...

My sister found the bill from my parent's wedding photographer from their May 27, 1956 wedding as shot by Fred Marcus himself. HE was THE guy at the time. For one wedding album, two parent albums and a few portraits, the bill was $250 plus tax and that was for a NYC hotel wedding. Wow! I don't know how my grandparents didnt go into hock!!!

My parents officiant charged my parents in the 70s $35. I've been quoted $400-700

In 1988, my sister's wedding at Terrace on the Park, with every conceivable extra was under 10K. The only thing that was priced simlar to today was the limos.

My grandmother gave me money to help pay for the wedding - $50! She thought that would pay for something like rings or flowers. I did all I could to not laugh. She soo meant well. I love my grandma.

i think my parents wedding cost less then $50 - they had a reception at my mom's parents house.

Re: The times are changing...

My sister also found the bills from my OTHER sister's wedding 16 years ago. There are many parallels and similarities between my function and hers. Both weddings are Saturday night temple weddings in the winter. We BOTH paid less per person for that reason. Her minimum was 200. Mine was 100. HER food was kosher. MINE was not. Kosher food DOES cost more because you need a special blessing by a man called a 'Mashgiach' who charges a fee and simply because the meats are more expensive.

HOWEVER. She paid over 5K for a 7 piece band in 1990. I am having a 10 piece band and I am not paying much more than she did relatively speaking. She met her minimum with 10 drop outs and her centerpieces were only $25 less than mine are 16 years later. I am having less people. She contributed nothing while FH and I are contributing about 20% (which to some isnt a lot but its all we can do - we KNOW we are fortunate).

The financial whiz that my other sister is comes to the grand conclusion and tells me that my wedding is actually costing less than our other sister's. FINALLY something I can rub in her face. Try being the youngest of 4 - they tortured me!!!

However, I would give it all up in a split second if I could have the one thing she had - Daddy. For that, I am truly jealous. It's been only two months and it is like it was yesterday.

Crazy... my grandparents got married in 1953 and they recently showed me this lined notepad that had every guests name and the wedding gift they gave to them. Most couples gave $5!!!!!!! The very generous guests gave $10 or even $15 per couple!

Mom and Dad had their 49th wedding anniversary just about a month and a half before Dad passed away on July 9th. I hope to G-d every one here has a long and good marriage the way they did. For those of you who have the honor to get married on May 27, 2006 consider yourselves blessed and golden as Mom and Dad would have been!

My grandparents were married in October 1947 and were up making sandwiches the night before their wedding. They lived in Brooklyn at the time and stopped at Coney Island for Nathan's hot dogs between the ceremony and the reception.
