The Village

Original post by MonkeyLuv

Mr Boots and I watched it last night. I thought it was interesting, but I think I need to see it again to really decide.

Did anyone else see it? What did you think?

i thought it was better then signs and unbreakable. kind of confusing, until you have that 'ohhhhhh, i get it' moment.

It was somewhere between Signs and Unbreakable for me, with Signs being a little better and Unbreakable being WAY worse.

ETA: Who is Bryce Howard?

Bryce Howard played Ivy Walker, the blind girl.

I'm so disappointed that no one liked Unbreakble! I like that one the most!

Hmm, I think I agree with you. Unbreakble was the comic book archetype drawn in human form. Very simplistic thematically.

The Village is definitely more complex.

I knew the ending before I saw it, it seemed less like a horror movie, and more of a study of the utopian society. It's not about the monsters, but the monstrous lengths people will go to for something they believe in or love.

After seeing it I thought that maybe it was marketed incorrectly.

true true liz i did not like this movie i thought the twist in it was kinda stupid

Re: The Village

i think they promoted it wrong. it wasnt a horror at all... it was like a love story!

And since someone mentioned the love story aspect...

I love the scene with Ivy's outstretched hand, the creature in the background moving towards her and Lucius taking her hand to pull her inside.

Actually OK -- I will admit that the love story between Ivy and Lucius was the best part of that movie for me... I thought it was so sweet and moving!

But that might also be because I HEART Joaquin Phoenix

I loved it. I love all of M Night's movies. At work, we refer to another office that we don't get along with as 'Those We Don't Speak Of'

The ending shocked me!

I loved it!!!

At first I thought it was dumb with that fake looking monster, but then at the end it all came together for me(just like all of his other movies).

The whole meaning behind that movie is amazing.

I didn't like it that much but it's partly because I figured it out 30 minutes into the movie, so the end wasn't much of a surprise.

I think I need to see it again also.. because I remember not liking it at ALL when DH and I saw it in the movies last year...

I thought the 'twist' was kind of lame .. but that's just me

ETA: I do think the performances were great though.. Bryce Howard is a great actress!

the 'twist' was kind of a non-twist. i mean, you kind of saw it coming, but not really

i agree...i was very much looking forward to seeing this movie and was extremely disappointed. It was sooo predictable.

Yes the end was strange, I thought it was going to be a scary movie, when we left the theatre so many were saying this sucked and I want my money back- the funny thing is too it was a packed theatre with tons of young people who were so mad.

Me neither I thought it was well written -at times it dragged out but I would have never figured out the ending just by the plot. I thought the twist was good, strange b/c I was expecting a horror flick but this movie made you think. Im a sucker for love stories so I didnt mind that part and I love the old country styles so for me I loved the outfits and the props.

I agree!!! But I think we're all way too jaded to really get the full effect of The Village. I mean, when you look at those 'monsters' you definitely think 'Oh, COME ON!!' but if you put yourselves in the shoes of those children, who have been conditioned to fear them more than anything else in their world and don't have TV or movies or video games, etc, you can appreciate that they would be really, really scared.

I don't think M Night is ever going to anything as amazing as Sixth Sense. Now we expect 'the twist' and are very critical of it. Nothing's gonna top it.

For me the thing that was great about Signs was Mel Gibson. The movie itself was a little far fetched, in my opinion, and bought into a lot of 'green men' stereotypes, but I think he gave a really moving performance.

Liz - Unbreakable!?! You're starting to worry me (although I always do think Bruce Willis is yummy!)

Just watched SAW last night. I have to say I was really disappointed with the ending, they've left it so openended and I thought there were too many loose ends...but I guess that's what sequels are for. I was pretty much queasy throughout the whole thing, though and thought it was very reminiscent of Seven. You know they shot the whole thing in 18 days!?!
