I went to a wedding where the bride's dress had to have been off the rack. it was very simple, which is fine, it suited her taste, but it was HANGING off of her. None of the BM's had their dresses altered either. it was just so obvious. She was a beautiful bride anyway.

Although I agree with all of you that there are things that other people do do that is tacky to us. I never care about the food that much at weddings. I care about the music and making the best time out of wherever I go. It's what you make of it. I went to a wedding at the Woodmere Country Club which starts at 160 a plate and then an all inclusive wedding in Brentwood. Obvious huge contrast in quality. And the Brentwood wedding was a blast!

In response to the message for me---if you read my post, you'd have seen that my concern was not for ladies whose halls are bashed, but for the actual 'unfortunate' brides that you mentiomed. You don't know who sees you saying things about their actual weddings online to all.

In other words, you see that someone went to a wedding at 'your' hall and hated it---big deal. On the other hand, you see that a bm or good friend who actually went to YOUR wedding 1) had bad feelings about the day; and 2) had no qualms about airing them publicly, and...well... I'm glad that I have classier friends than that.

BTW, mya--you're right--when a friend asks an opinion, you should be honest. I'm merely pointing out that a lot of unsolicited opinions have been given in this thread alone about brides and weddings who never made themselves known online and who never asked to be rated, ranked, and reviewed---girls who just invited people who they thought were their friends to their weddings to share in their happiness.

It's hard to respect people who thrive so on holding up their friends as objects of pity. If these girs wanted to be evaluated onine, they'd make themselves known.

I'm sorry if this is in regards to anything i posted. For me going through my own wedding expereince I tried to think of myself at other peoples weddings and what things stood out at me. The dresses the moms wore, make up, flowers, Dj etc. The reality is people talk..they gossip. I've been to weddings where i thought the place was GORGEOUS and showed good taste..and then talking to another guest they felt the bride & groom were showing off. We all critique its human nature but wordage is the key to not hurting feelings. EVERYONE wedding will be critiqued. SOme you will hear and some you will not.
Now there is a difference if they are based on truth or just people being plain nasty

IMO there is nothing more helpful than people reporting their actual experiences even if it is bad..Word of mouth is such a useful tool for a consumer - If enough people have a bad experience at a venue that I might choose I want to know! Keep the opinions coming..

I've seen some pretty ugly invites and centerpieces...but I suppose they are left to interpretation, too.

At one wedding, the cake was a 'pound cake' without the hole in the middle...it was heavy and had that fruit-like taste (citrus-y) and wasn't very good.

My Worst Wedding was my poor Sweet Cousin's wedding. She didn't deserve this.

The Maitred of the Hall had asked her for Cash as their final payment. She was a bit nervous about handing over the large some of cash...but She did....and You can guess what happened next......The Maitred skipped Town with their money. He Never told anyone that the there would be a wedding that day......so 150 people showed up at 5:00 to be served dinner.....and There was nothing made. We didn't get served dinner until after 11:00 People were leaving to go get McDonald's down the road.

I have to admit....She was such a good Sport about the whole thing....She didn't shed one tear that we noticed.....and She stayed on the dance floor the whole night....and Acted like nothing was wrong....

She must have felt like dying of embarrassment that night.

But she is happily married with a beautiful Son.

My coworker had a wedding at a castle, and it was beautiful. BUT, it was old and there was NO indoor plumbing! They had OUTHOUSES. It totally ruined the open bar for me, since I didn't want to drink and have to pee all night.

I personally see this thread as extremely helpful. If you hear something negative about your hall, at least you can bring it up at your next meeting with the Banquet Manager. You can tactfully mention the negative things you heard and discuss what can be done to ensure the same things don't happen on your day. If you LOVE your hall you will love it no matter what. It's a good way to keep things in check/balance if you think about it.

Well, my bad wedding story is in relation to food, TIMING (most important), and cell phones.

It was a rainy day so the outdoor ceremony set-up had to be moved indoors (which is what anyone would do). Because of this, the ceremony had to take place in the Reception room which made things a bit cramped. Many guests didn't have the sense to turn off their cell phones, and that included the wait staff. So we all heard a cacophony of Ring Tones and Hip Hop songs while the B&G were exchanging their vows. It wasn't very funny at the time, but the bride did mention at a later time that she may be the only woman to say her vows to the tune of 50 cent. LOL. So as a request to all - PLEASE TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONES DURING THE CEREMONY. It's the least we can do.

Here comes the timing portion. For some reason, our food didn't come out for about 3 hours (nearly the end of the night), so everyone was STARVING. But we all kept drinking so at least we were tipsy. About 30 minutes before the Reception ended, the cake was brought out so the B&G could cut into it and take their first bite as husband and wife. Then while the bride was feeding the groom, all the waiters came out with trays and trays of cold chicken, fish, and veggie dishes. Needless to say, many were seen at a nearby Jillian's stuffing their faces. But as I mentioned before, everyone was drinking on an empty stomach so we were a happy bunch anyway. :)

Re: the worst ...what

Thankfully, all the weddings I have been to were pretty good.

A few years back though, I went to an upscale place on the water. The place was beautiful, weather was great, room was big and pretty.

But when we sat down, we realized we had a 12-person table. It was extremely uncomfortable. I'm not kidding when I say that we all had to keep our elbows in in order to eat at the same time.

I thought the food was good except for the potatoes. They weren't hot and were overdone. How they overcooked them and they still came out cold was beyond me.

But the seating thing turned out to be something that stuck in my mind. So we arranged to go to the Milleridge an hour before a wedding, to see the setup. We sat down at a 10-person table, side by side by side, to make sure that we had enough elbow room.

I say, take all the negatives here and make them a positive - ensure they don't happen at your wedding!

Well said. I think the best point is in bold. And if you do see something negative about your place, to consider it before reacting defensively.

It also depends on your expectations. My venue has been looked down on by some brides here because it wasn't fancy enough for their tastes. But since we did not want fancy because we are not fancy-type people, it was a perfect choice for us.

no it is the b&g's choice it's their day not yours

I agree - I wanted a no alcohol wedding for personal reasons (but I decided to compromise and serve beer & wine even though I REALLY don't want any alcohol at all) but some of the things I have heard on this and other threads is kind of mean, because people may have good reasons for why they did things a certain way.....

Now as for problems with a specific hall, that is helpful. My boss hosted a Christening at my hall last week & I was TOTALLY grilling him about everything I don't mind if people say negative things about my hall because I can take it into consideration and see if it's someone being picky or if it's a true concern (Like, only seat 10 at a table type thing is a VERY helpful tip!!)

not a wedding - but I went to my mom's 75 year old cousin's engagement party and it was the worst entertainment EVER - like 2 seventy year old guys - one playing keyboard and the other singing, it was like some horrible cheesy lounge act!

Re: the worst ...what

I only had one bad experience with a catering hall. My cousin had her wedding at a very popular catering hall and they forgot to put out her food for the cocktail hour. She went over her menu and picked out everything she wanted (she had a full cocktail hour with pasta, meat, seafood, cold display, hot dishes, etc), and when the time came their was NOTHING in the cocktail hour except for her upgraded seafood bar and passed finger food<--- NOTHING else! Everyone did not question it because they thought that is what she paid for, but then when she was done with her pictures and came into the room to say hello, she saw that their was nothing, and she flipped! It turns out that the BM she did the menu with forgot to turn in her sheet to the chef and maitre d. She was so embarressed and upset, I felt so bad for her.

The only other bad thing that I saw at a wedding (different wedding) was actually the bride and grooms fault. They hired a person to play music (I will not call it a DJ because this woman certainly was not a DJ) and they brought a stero with CD's. The only people that could hear the music and speeches were the people sitting at the 4 closest tables to the person playing the music. They had to put a microphone up to the stero so that they could hear the music for the bride and grrom's first dance, and parent's dances. Other than that, no one was dancing.

I thought the same thing - pretty cool how we are all questioning the things that these girls questioned 3 years ago.
