the worst ...what

Re: the worst ...what

I forgot a worse wedding experience, probably because it was so traumatic, I blocked it out.

This wasn't in NY though, it was RI at a mansion.

This is a real 'Wow!' looking type of place. Check out this picture:

Sure, it's beautiful. I wish that made up for everything else but it didn't.

The cocktail hour was on the back veranda and was only passed food, no tables and chairs anywhere, no chafing dishes or plates even. I thought I might have been mistaken about this until I found this picture on their website:

cocktail hour

There were family members in their 80's and even 90's attending. You think they would provide some kind of seating for them.

Then we went inside and found that since they couldn't fit all the guests in one room, we were seperated into two seperate rooms with the foyer inbetween! This is the floor plan: Floor plan

We were in the Aldrich and Ivory rooms.

There was noplace for the DJ except on the right side of the foyer, where it's all polished tile floors. It's not a place you feel comfortable dancing in, it feels like you're leaving the building. And the acoustics weren't right, with all that noise bouncing around off the tile floors and cathedral ceilings.

And would you believe, the site fee for this place was $6000!!! Food, alcohol, cake aren't included and neither is wait staff.

I knew ahead of time how expensive it was but didn't know I was going to be stuck in a corner of a non-family room at a tiny 6-person table. If I had known, I wouldn't have taken days off of work to go and certainly wouldn't have given as much money as I did. The bride was invited to my wedding but declined - no gift, no card.

Can you tell I'm a little bitter? It's just so much money to pay for something that most of my family largely considered to be the most idiotic setup for a wedding ever. At the very least, it wasn't planned with the guests in mind.

No I don't think I have... but a couple of months ago I did see a bride from a distance where the veil did not match her dress...looked yellow and her dress was white...It looked weird but could have been an heirloom or could have meant something to her!

They had to put a microphone up to the stero so that they could hear the music for the bride and grrom's first dance, and parent's dances. Other than that, no one was dancing.

interpret as you choose - but that is ghetto!!!! lmao. i am seriously cracking up at some of these stories - so funny.

Re: the worst ...what

okay i have not been to a lot of weddings but the ones i have been have had different things bad with them.

weddings out of long island are just different. out west wedding.. i was not in the bridal party but fh was. i recieved a corsage, which i wore. I found out that was the only way to get free drinks. other than that it was cash bar and no one tipped the bartender. people at the wedding wore jeans and t shirts, not just one or two people a lot. this wedding also had a cheese bite for a cocktail hour with mosquitos flying everywhere.

another wedding the dj stunk. it was the house dj and he screwed up their intro song. he totally scatched it.

another wedding the cocktail hour room was tiny and i ate with the photographers since there was no place to eat at all.

The only thing that has really ever bothered me at a wedding is not enough seating in the cocktail hour room.

ETA:Thats why I chose a hall that had more than enough seating for everyone.

In reply to 'HONEST'

I think the 'sensitive' thing has gone a little too far IMO.
I am a very sensitive person and I try to be respectful of others...but come on now! I am sorry if you are hurt reading things and bothered by peoples opinions...but that is what this forum is for!
Opinions
I have been GREATFUL for negative remarks about my hall, since it allows me to go and ASK them questions and inquire into possible problems. I might suffer the same fate as an unfortuante bride if I didn't hear the stories.

I will say that the 'Gossip/Sharing' border is crossed quite a bit, but that's probably 50/50 around here. Half the stuff we discuss is gossip and the other half is serious and helpful.
JMO again, but if we all walk on eggshells for everyone we won't say anything useful!

I went to a wedding that had an 80 year old dj who played 'Do you Believe' by Cher twice -which was probably his most modern selection.

ETA: It was a family event so the company was good at least. Everyone got bombed and it got better.

i went to a wedding once where the boutinniere of the groomsmen was a TWIG! Hello? What's that? It looked like they didn't think about it so they just picked up something from the ground to stick on the guys. Bleh...

At another wedding (indian) we went to we didnt even get to dance cus the couple's family all wanted to give a speech! So we endured about 2 hours of speeches and hoopla about the bride and groom, then saw slideshows of them (who CARES?). Sorry but as it got closer to 11pm and the food wasn't ready yet, everyone got fidgetty, some even left! We finally got to eat at 11pm, 3 hours after the wedding started!

I overheard that I lucked out 'cus I didnt attend the 3 hour long ceremony that started at 2pm. Oy!!!

This sounds terrible, but since I have gotten engaged....ok started dating Mike seriously, I have been looking for things that I didn't like at other peoples wedding. Now either I have friends that have really good taste, or I am not that picky, but I haven't found anything that I haven't liked in any wedding that I have been to. Although I do prefer live music to a DJ. But if we couldn't have a band, I would have no problem with a DJ.

We went to a Wedding at Fox Hollow and the food was AWFUL! The CH had no passarounds and when the trays that where on the tables where empty they never re-filled them! The enres where cold, and tasted like they had been cooked the day before. I felt bad as I know this was a pricey wedding. We all went out after and had chicken fingers!

My friend got married and I don't think the priest had quite fully prepared a homily....he started with how a marriage is like a painting...you have a beautiful picture of what you want in your head, but it comes out nothing like that at all....FH and I were like um, what? Then we thought that maybe he was going to go into the fact that love is what is important or something like that, but he panicked and you could see it in his face, so he just kinda sputtered around and around. People were like, umm, can we make him stop talking?

Then we were sat with the MOH's family, and they didn't even speak English. FH and I made the best of it though. We just danced and had a great time by ourselves.....to this day though, whenever we want a laugh we go 'marriage is like a painting......'

I went to a wedding where the girls had the weirdest dresses but it went with the bride and grooms personality...just not something I would pick. We did get an invitation the other day...it just looked sloppy to me.

has any1 been to a wedding where they thought something was just..bad..ugly..horrible... like a dress, food, flowers, invite choice, wording? anything?? im bored!!

Since this post has been resurrected . . . two experiences:

First one - out of state, the 'reception hall' was a converted bowling alley, and you could tell. Both bride and groom were from LI. The decorations were nothing more than ballons and crepe paper. But the biggest problem is 7 years later, I still don't have a thank-you.

Second one - my sister's wedding ceremony was almost completely ruined when a fire whistle went off in the middle of her vows.

I've been to so many weddings and i've been very critical of some of them. the truth may be that it's just a matter of my taste being different. it's not like any of the weddings sucked. just that i would have preferred things differently if it was my own wedding. i guess we should be glad that not all weddings are the same.

My cousin's wedding in North Carolina. It's all food related. First we got salad, then the main course (one type of chicken only) and then mashed up wedding cake. Best part was when someone at my table goes.. 'I didn't order chicken' and I said.. 'no one did' I had 3 more choices at my shower than she did at her wedding.

Honestly I have been to some doozies, but if the couple was happy and having a blast, it made it that much more enjoyable.

IMO there is nothing more helpful than people reporting their actual experiences even if it is bad..Word of mouth is such a useful tool for a consumer - If enough people have a bad experience at a venue that I might choose I want to know! Keep the opinions coming..

I agree. I don't agree with 'bashing' a hall or a particular wedding event (due to just 'taste') BUT I do like to read posts stating what a guest liked and disliked at a particular venue. There is a way to word things without being too harsh. I am sure that each and every one of our venues have people who dislike and like the place. Who cares???? We all choose our venues based on different decisions.

BUT like I said before, if the poster words things in a proper way, then I look at it as positive criticism, if the problem was known before this could allow many future brides to address the hall with these concerns.
