This infuriates me

Liz...I'm not sure how you are reasoning...

Board Members serve as public officials

whether or not they are funded is moot...my father worked for the post office and he was a GOVERNMENT employee...from his benefits...to his paycheck...his paycheck was from the US TREASURY!!!

Re: This infuriates me

but your father got paid

Board Members serve as public officials without pay

these board members do not get paid.

Michelle W - PERFECTLY SAID

If people find comfort in it, especially the victims families let it go, haven't they lost so much and suffered already.

I think some need to look at the bigger picture, it wasn not erected as a cross or as a testament to 'God' but simply metal from the wreckage that happened to take that position. So instead of arguing about it's religious merits can't people see it as a sign of strength, that in essence a piece of the towers is 'still standing'

Re: This infuriates me

the fact of the matter is that it needs to be removed for construction...it has been left up as long as possible (its the last piece to be removed)

I did lose a good friend - so can I not be upset? and he was not Christian...

from Misty's original post The trade center site is owned by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the bistate governmental agency

this is an argument for the protection of the rights afforded to all Americans

What if the symbol that was left was an Islamic symbol. I know nothing about Islam, but if they have some sort of symbol and this was left there, people would want it down immediately!! But becasue it is a cross, it is supposed to stay.

It is gov't property, so there should be no religious symbol on it. Move it to a near by church.

Is there a religious symbol at the Pentagon???

Re: This infuriates me

Yabbo - I honestly think the reporter who wrote the article is incorrect in that statement. It is a public agency.

Shelzyp - There may not be any religious symbol at the Pentegon. The point being made here had been that no one brought it there and placed it there. It is part of the building that was left standing, and some have used its resemblence to a cross as a means of solice to them. No one stood there and built a cross on the site, no one drove a cross to the site and left it there.

But just because it fell in that position and a priest blessed it, it should stay??

Re: This infuriates me

I'm sorry, but for those who say that it just fell that way and has no symbolism as a cross, why not place it sideways with the long part going horizontally so that it doesn't resemble a cross if that's not the purpose of it? Or upside down?

I hate to make generalizations, but I have a feeling that most people who are saying that it's just a cross and carries no symbolism and that if it comforts some people it should be left there, are not in a religious minority in this country, i.e., some Christian denomination, rather than Jewish, Muslim, Hindi, Buddhist, Atheist, etc.

I would like to thank those who are keeping this an open, civil discussion and who are not taking this personally, as everyone is entitled to his/her opinion, as long as they are not trying to push it on other people. There is absolutely nothing wrong with disagreeing with each other...that is one of the basic fundamental rights we enjoy as Americans. It's just when things get ugly that people get upset or feel hurt. So thank you!

I'm Jewish. I didn't say it carries no symbolism...just refer to all of my previous posts for my opinions.

Great thread though...

See...I told you I hate to make generalizations! But I did say 'most' and not all.

I am Catholic and can understand that a lot of people will not find the symbolism comforting and that it should be removed.

I am really interested in everyone's points of view also.

Re: This infuriates me

I honestly think the reporter who wrote the article is incorrect in that statement so the associated press does not have fact checkers? that seems like a far reach to me...

the fact is that the memorial and new building have already been approved...this is the last thing to be removed...it was left up as long as possible to comfort whomever chose to be comforted by it...but construction has to go on...

I think no matter what transpires there will always be some person, group or organization that will find fault with what they do at the WTC site. There is no pleasing everyone. I think that piece of metal should be salvaged in someway (a sculpture maybe?) to represent that there was still a piece of the WTC standing.

Re: This infuriates me

I've said what I think about the cross. What I would like to say is that I hope no one else wishes I find any god. I have my own peace... it's within me. I do not want to find any god, and I'd like no one to wish that I do. To say I should find a god makes it sound like I am lost. I am not lost. I know my self, I am at peace with myself, and I have more virtue and righteousness than half the churchgoers in this world. I don't need to find god, god does not need to find me.

Thank you.

'AMEN' SMOOCH!!

interesting article
it mentions how there is a banner that reads 'God's House' on the cross...I don't understand how people could favor the disregard of our Constitution...

Re: This infuriates me

Yes mistyeyed. I don't remember who it was. I'm not offended by people's opinions at all, but I do not want anyone suggesting I need to find god, I don't. If someone else needs their god, that's okay for them. I have no problem with religion at all. It's a beautiful thing, and it works for many people. It does not, however, work for me. And that's okay. Everyone is okay. As long as we don't push our beliefs onto others. I'm not pushing my athiesm on anyone, I don't want anyone to push their on me. Not that the person who said it was doing that, but they expressed sympathy that we athiests haven't found god. I don't need sympathy, I am at peace with myself. I'm sure the person meant no harm or insult, I just wanted to point out that I don't need to find anything, and I don't need anything to find me.

Not trying to cause a raucus here, just asking that please no one ask that I need to find anything.
