This infuriates me

Re: This infuriates me

but in the end I guess it was the atheists fault that 9/11 happened anyway...at least according to some Christian leaders, like Jerry Falwell and priests at St Francis Church in Greenlawn

can you see why atheists would be upset?

Re: This infuriates me

btw, it was a comment made by lunatrek on page 3. i have no issues with lunatrek. she probably didn't even know that by saying that, it implies we are missing something. i'm not upset or angry, i just want to point out that i don't need to find god, and god doesn't need to find me. and i'm sure god knows that, since she is all-knowing.

Erica - I cannot believe that anyone other then terrorists can be blamed for 9/11!!! That is so IGNORANT it's not even funny. And it's even worse when it comes from people that have a devout audience!!

and i'm sure god knows that, since she is all-knowing. As someone who refers to herself as an agnostic Jew (oxymoron much?), I know what it is like to have someone say that I need to be saved. That's why I believe that everyone is entitled to their opinion, but please, please don't expect to be greeted warmly by the person, or group of people, whose throats you are shoving your opinion down. It's just not a way for people to want to see all the various sides of things. And I think that's what caused this whole tragedy in the first place...an equally wrongful desire on everyone's part (both the U.S. and the evil jerks who did this) to force their opinions on others and expect everyone to live their lives one way.

ETA: I do NOT think this was America's fault...I completely and utterly blame the terrorists for this. My point was that no one is innocent in trying to tell the other that the way they are living is wrong. Gak! I hope no one read that the wrong way!

I was taken back by the comments...but my moms neighbor, who has been a devout Catholic was there...and said the congregation clapped...she walked out and has never been back...

Erica,

That is such BS, the only place the fault of 9/11 lies is with the sick terrorists who plotted it under Osama Bin Laden. It is such @ssinine comments like those that cause controversy.

Re: This infuriates me

but you have to understand that atheists get comments like this from the Christian majority all the time...or comments that we have to be saved...

athiests are trying to protect their rights...and that is the point of the lawsuit

Re: This infuriates me

WAIT WAIT WAIT!!! Hang on. We ALL know the only fault lies with the terrorists. But the US is not an innocent bystander, as were all those people whose lives were ripped away nearly two years ago. We push our beliefs on others all the time. We CERTAINLY DID NOT deserve any terrorist attack. None. No one needed to die for anything. But please don't think the US is perfect. We are not. WE DO, however, try to do our best. However, even the best intentions are faulty. Innocent people should NOT have to pay for the faults of their government.

Smooch...that's exactly what I was saying, but was afraid that it came out the wrong way. Thanks for clarifying better than I did!

It's wrong to blame any one group in particular regardless. I don't know where she heard that comment but that is just awful! What happened on 9/11 was a senseless act- pure and simple. Regardless of faith it was a crime against human decency.

Irenie19 - you said it. A crime against human decency.

A terrible terrible tragedy...

Re: This infuriates me

I can't believe some of the hypocrites on this board lately....

You all are taking very definite stands and declaring your ideals and principles - yet I'm assuming most, if not all of you got married in some form of religious place of worship? And now we're getting uppity about God and being politically correct! Please people! If you don't live under some form of belief, then why did you bother getting married in a church, synogogue, mosque? Why not the park, etc.? Not pretty enough for the pics??? I see where the priority lies...

This whole topic is total b.s. and it's about time the d.a.m.n. liberals stopped worrying about what is going on with everyone else and tend to their own business. Cross, burning bush, Menorah, Book of Koran, I don't give a crap. As long as people can find solace in the tragedy of that day. That's the whole basis of what started this mess anyway....

Re: This infuriates me

Please don't burn every liberal because you don't agree with what some people said on here.

As for people getting married in a church who are not religious, I will respond directly to that, becaus I am one of those people.

I am an athiest. And I got married in a Catholic church. I am NOT a hypocrite.

I got married in the Catholic church because it is important to my DH. He is Catholic. I made that compromise for him. What is important to him is important to me. I respect his beliefs as he respects mine.

I got married in my grandmother's church because she passed away 11 years ago, and my grandfather 10 years before that. My two uncles before them. Getting married in their church was the closest I could get to them. It meant the world to my father's family to see me married in that church.

Please don't assume that because people get married in churches but don't believe in religion are hypocrites.

Shamee, I think it's unfortunate that you needed to turn a civilized discussion ugly. You made assumptions and then tore people down as if what you assumed was actually fact and felt the need to hurl invectives to get your point across. Was it really necessary to go there? Do you think that's going to facilitate more open discussion?

I am an athiest and I am not getting marreid in a church, so I guess I am not a hypocrit.

I dont think she turned anything ugly..why is she supposed to hold back her opinions??

And Im sorry how do you expect something with so much feeling and emotion not turn ugly???

I think that no matter what anyone says, trying to take something away that brings solace to any one person is ridiculous. As I said before, people always just have to have something to fight about.

Re: This infuriates me

No one said she should hold back her opinions, but to instead of stating her opinion as so many have been able to do all day, instead she chose to call names (calling people hypocrites for starters) and make assumptions (that those who disagree with the cross and are getting married in a house of worship have their priorities in the wrong place, assuming that all who disagree with this are liberals and are what is wrong with this, etc.).

Agree, disagree, but at least be decent about it. Just as anyone else, I'm entitled to my opinion, and I felt that post changed the tone of this thread to something that it hadn't previously been.

And Im sorry how do you expect something with so much feeling and emotion not turn ugly??? ...I think we've managed for it to not turn ugly in all the previous posts all day.

As I said, I think it's unfortunate. I am not taking it personally...I just feel a little bad that Shamee felt she had to react that way.

Re: This infuriates me

Everyone here has been expressing their opinions all day as EVERYONE is welcome to share theirs. This debate has carried on respectfully for six pages with emotion but by no means ugly and now there's name calling

I think Shamee's remarks were incredibly judgemental. And if you want you can catagorize me as a liberal that thinks all people should find solace in a monument honroing and memoralizing thousands of people in a country that vehemently seperates church and state, fine. BUT DO NOT CALL ME A HYPOCRIT when you know nothing about me. I am Catholic, I am not religious, I don't think this cross is appropriate and I DID NOT GET MARRIED IN CHURCH!

Re: This infuriates me

This thread went way too far overboard... I would never blame anyone, of any faith for what happened on 9/11. IT IS NO EVEN A PASSING THOUGHT THAT ATHIESTS CAUSED THIS. Nor is it the fault of Islam or or Muslim. This act of terrorism was done by a group of radicals, and no matter what religion they claim to have done this in the name of.. it is not sane. No real religion, nor someone who does not believe in an organized religion or god for that matter can be held responsible for this act. This was done by nothing more than a terrorist group.. who can claim they did it for whatever religon they want to.. religion, or the lack of it does not cause these things to happen...bad humans do!!
