This infuriates me

Re: This infuriates me

I think when Yabbobay posted that, she was saying that some extremists have blamed atheists, not that anyone here did or that any reasonable person did. Of course, it's not my place to speak for her, but that's how I read her post.

Re: This infuriates me

I did not read the rest of the thread since I left work today at 3:00, but from just posting and looking one up, I heve seen that there has been name calling. Is this true???? If it is, whoever did this, whatever view or stance you have, feel nothing but ashamed now!!! That is not the point here. That is how these so called 'holy wars' (oxymoron) begin. Take note of what has happened in history and what is happening today, and you should be ashamed!!!

People were called hypocrits on page 6 (Ibelieve) and on page 3 people were told they need to find god, and for those that have not, it was implied that there was somrthing wrong with them.

jannshari - Yabbobay was just saying what others said to her, she does not agree with this statement she was just telling a story that a lady experienced while in church after 9/11.

I know Shelzy...I think that some people are misreading her post (not on purpose, of course).

Re: This infuriates me

sorry...I was away...

the point of my post was only that atheists get bashed quite often...and I applaud them for making sure their 1st amendment rights are not trampled on by the majority..

and BTW...I WAS NOT married in a church...there was NO mention of the word God in my ceremony nor would DH or I have it any other way...I have shown my pictures a gazillion times and just b/c it was not in a church doesn't mean it wasn't pretty...i was married in a garden on the water and it couldn't have been anywhere nicer!!!!

Yabbo, did someone insult your wedding? What the heck is going on here? Am I posting on a Bible Belt Jesus Freak website??

Can someone explain something to me...

If you are an atheist, than why or what do you care about any religious symbol? If nothing symbolizes your religion because you do not have one, does that mean that another religion shouldnt have symbols??

I literally do not understand this and if someone can explain it to me, I would be very grateful.

It's like if someone said to you that you should have menorah or star of david in your house. You aren't jewish so you shouldn't have to honor jewish traditions.

Re: This infuriates me

hi girls- I guess what my mom said was true- never discuss politics or religion if you dont want a heated discussion!

all I know is that I was at that site 2-3 days after it was hit. I was in Ground Zero. Workers, cops, fireman, emts, volunteers worked relentlessly, digging hoping to find SOMEONE ALIVE. then eventually as the days passed THEY STILL WORKED but now to recover bodies or pieces thereof.
I believe half of those lost had NOTHING recovered...which means (to me) that they were turned into ash.
If agmonst all of this twisted metal, brick, mortar and ash, someone finds solace in a piece of the building that remained standing ...found some peace or resolve to keep on working even when things were futile...then maybe it should be part of a memorial to all of those that were lost...and to those who worked in that huge tomb. Many of those working there called Ground Zero Holy Ground when they spoke to me.

Let's try to be respectful.
I am sorry if ANY religious figure assigned any portion of blame to atheists. This was executed by RADICALS ..upon innocents. ANy thing (even religion) taken to an extreme can become dangerous...which is why the forefathers inserted 'separation of Church and state'. They had enough of bowing to King George and set up a new world that would welcome all.

I am sure that the memorial will respectfully honor all victems...with both 'religious' and non- religious icons.

and- food for thought- who are WE to say that ANY that perished would be disturbed to know that the ground they died on had a cross placed on it?
I would like to think that all of us wind up in a better place where ALL are accepted regardless of what they believed on earth...as long as they were good people.....

my 2 cents..

Again, FWIW, I really think name calling is not going to get us anywhere. No matter who I agree with, I don't think it's right for anyone to make assumptions or be judgemental.

Whew!! I said my piece on the first page of this thread and wasn't going to say anymore. But... (you knew that was coming I bet) I have now read every post and do find many of the Christian bashing posts inappropriate and tasteless. Just imagine the reaction if someone started bashing those of any of the other faiths mentioned in these posts. The thread would probably be removed.

I certainly believe that each of us is entitled to opinions and beliefs whatever they may be. However I don't believe it is right to paint everyone with the same brush. It's wrong, plain and simple. Not all Christians feel that the everything revolves around them nor that the world must bend to their wishes.

I will reiterate again that if this remant of wreckage brings a measure of peace to any of the families who lost someone or to any of the workers who spent months toiling and giving their blood, sweat and tears to recover any small body part for a loved one then it certainly does belong there. That's where it came from. That is where it should stay. Not as a religious symbol, but as a remembrance of those who were forever lost. Cut in half or turn it on it's side. But it should stay.

Re: This infuriates me

I want to point out that today, in this thread myself and Yabbobay have taken opposite stances on this issue, BUT NOT ONCE HAVE WE CALLED EACH OTHER A NAME. Let's not forget that the point of being American is that we are all allowed our own views and opinions and that is what we are all about here!!!

Re: This infuriates me

it was just mentioned that people were hypocrits defending the atheists...but getting married in church...then it was implied that the 'hypocrits' got married in a church b/c it was prettier...so mine must not have been as pretty I guess...

noreen...it is in the Constitution that government cannot establish a Church and this has been pretty much interpreted (like thecourts in Alabama) that religious symbols cannot be on government property as it is seen as the government endorsing a religion...I know that this case the gov't would not be endorsing Christianity...but it sets a precedent that can be used in bigger cases...if it doesn't stop the idea is that one day there may be a state religion...

phyl...i mentioned the radicals (although I don't know if St Francis Church are radicals...and the congregation who clapped), to make a point of what atheists go through...it seems no one has a problem discriminating against them or bashing them b/c they have religion on their side...

the point is that it was left up for as long as possible to comfort and console...i am all for that...but the site needs to move on...they need to finish the real memorial that will console ALL victims and family...IF Christians want to keep the cross...they need to find private land to put it on...and go there as much as they want...

Re: This infuriates me

btw - if it means anything, I spoke to mu best friend about this tonight (who is Jewish, -and that I even have to mention that is shameful-) and she has no problem with the 'cross' metal that is left there!

Re: This infuriates me

Wendy...I hope that you did not take my posts as an insult...i try very hard not to...the ONLY reason I mentioned the religious right was to explain why many atheists are fighting this...they have been blamed and called names (not on this thread)...but I did not mean to infer that people on this site were part of that religious right...
