I find a lot of the out sourced customer serivce departments do this

when you call Amex- you get so forgein country and every other word is MA'AM- I know they just want to be nice and respectful- but come on!

I was to stangle them- but once you ask for a supervisor- you are back in the US- it clams me down

I hate being called Ma'am. Especially if it follows someone saying, 'Wham Bam, thank you.'

Im in SC and it is considered RUDE not to say ma'am and sir

Yep, in parts of VA too!

Where my friend student taught her kids always had to say 'yes ma'am'' and 'no ma'am'

And when I see her dad it's always 'yes sir' and 'no sir'

You get the look of death otherwise

Me-I say it but it always sounds rehearsed and funny-wspecially with my NY accent
ETA: I say it and peoplelook at me crooked and then ask where I am from...makes me gigle

look at the bright side, they could be calling you 'sir' by accident

heh

I MUCH prefer Ma'am

I hate 'little lady' or 'missy'
Ma'am is to me so much more respectful.

I know as a kid and even now I still say 'yes Ma'am' to women deserve respect.

*shrug* Maybe I'm old school southern lady
