Not 'poor' as in money, but 'poor' kids as in I feel bad for the kids who have to ride the bus or subway. They didn't even propose a reduced fare, but to cut the card altogether! You'd be surprised how many city kids (my daughter included) have to ride the trains and subways because they are too far to walk and no car in the family. I didn't think you were starting
, not today!! It's just a bad deal all around for the city and I too cannot understand the logic of Patterson or Bloomberg
thank godd
i agree! the card shouldn't be cut altogether but they should have to pay something. let's face it, everyone's economic situation is different but when you choose to live in the most expensive city in the country, you choose to incur the expensive costs of everyday living here, and that includes transportation. i pay over $300 a month to get to work, and when all is said and done at the end of the month, i have no money left over to do or buy anything for myself. meanwhile, kids are riding the subway for free everyday (and not only to get to school since they can be used until 8:30 p.m.) and i'm getting charged higher fares bc we need to close budget gaps?
instead of taking away jobs that the city NEEDS to keep people safe and healthy, how about fining people for illegally selling things on the street, or littering, or whatever else is possible.
on another point, i'm not trying to take anything away from haiti, it was a terrible tragedy and they deserve help from everyone who can give it. but if our country has states and cities that are hurting this badly, how can the federal government find BILLIONS of dollars (aside from the donations) to give? yes, i agree, the government should have given them some money, but BILLIONS when our own people are hurting?
sorry, i'm in a terrible mood about this whole thing
I agree on the Haiti thing, 100%. I'm totally with you.
The kids though, get the use of MetroCards til 8:30 because of After school activities... which I think is good, it's incentive to keep them able to participate instead of hanging out doing nothing cause they can't figure out how to get home from practice/games/rehearsals and whatnot. And they don't all get them for free, it's income based, some are partially subsidized. They DO however, need to reevaluate the criteria I think, though.
And you're right about the fact that there are other ways they could find to pull money from. So much of the effort to raise revenue is misdirected.
Run for office, we'll vote for you
