The kids though, get the use of MetroCards til 8:30 because of After school activities... which I think is good, it's incentive to keep them able to participate instead of hanging out doing nothing cause they can't figure out how to get home from practice/games/rehearsals and whatnot. And they don't all get them for free, it's income based, some are partially subsidized. They DO however, need to reevaluate the criteria I think, though. And you're right about the fact that there are other ways they could find to pull money from. So much of the effort to raise revenue is misdirected.

unfortunately, from a purely LEGAL perspective, i think the judge made the right decision based on what was presented and what the law says. However, what the law says isn't always what makes practical sense. If it did, I wouldn't have so many cases on my shelves!

how tho? it's a paper test and they are not asked for their race, religion, ethnicity, etc. until AFTER the test so those who passed the test would have already been in, giving no room to pass judgement based on color. how can he say that the city needs to pay them money they would have gotten if they were given a job however many months ago? that's like telling me, you interviewed for this job a year ago but didn't get it .... here's the money you would have earned. doesn't make sense

I know it doesn't make sense - I agree with that. It's the stupid constitutional analysis that ensues when the court is presented with a certain set of facts. For example, say they charged $500 to take the test. If the plaintiffs can show that minorities are more impacted by this (meaning that minorities are more likely than caucasians to not be able to afford to pay the fee to take the test), there can be an 'inference' of discriminatory intent on the part of the city.

What about the proposed metrocard for the school kids? Does Patterson have any idea what the truancy and drop out rate will be for poor kids who have to pay for metrocards to get to school? Especially when their firefighter and city cop parents lose their jobs in his proposal...what a jacka*s!

I'm confused about the whole metrocard thing. I know students should at least get a discounted rate for their cards, but why should they get them for free? Do these kids HAVE to use the subway to get to school? I know that the kids I see going to the private schools near my work on the subway are probably well off enough to buy a $90 metrocard a month. No one NEEDS a metrocard to get anywhere -- they're choosing to take the subway instead of walking.
The whole thing is stupid. I hate Bloomberg. I hate Paterson.
I totally agree. Just one thing though about the private school kids. There are some kids who have scholarships and grants because their parents can't afford for them to go to to the school. So I really do think that kids should be able to get free metrocards but for parents who'e salaries are under a certain amount. The dropout rate and the truancy is outrangous. My FBIL in a cop and does truancy and he won't even talk about what he sees. Why make it easy for kids to not go to school. I HATE Paterson! And if Bloomberg would just give New York some of his money we'd all be better off!
