so, Richie (my StepFather) is on the phone with the parent of a failed student (he teaches Music at Post)...and the
student called before..threatening to put Richie 'on the carpet' if he didn't pass.
The kid missed 13 classes, and didn't hand in 3 take home tests....then got a 52 on the final and wanted to pass....this is his 2nd time failing the
same course...and now, his parents are suing the school. what a world.

I have NEVER- when I was in college and I screwed up this bad I wouldn't have my parents SUE THE COLLEGE!@!!!!

I would be ashamed to tell my parents and there is NO WAY my parents would back me up after being irresponsible!

My Father would have walloped me instead of suing the school. This is why the youth of today acts the way they do. They have no consequences to their actions

That's unbelievable!! Instead of worrying about suing the school those parents should take a serious look at their child - I would be in big trouble explaining to my parents why I missed all those classes and tests...

I just notice more and more how these kids of today are very different from me growing up (I'm in my early 30s)

God I love frivolous (sp) lawsuits.

Judges get so pissed off with laywers that take on those cases. You know they're just looking for money when they take them on.
And the sad thing is that half the time the defendent SETTLES because it's cheaper to do that than to waste money having their lawyers defend the case!!

What a wonderful lesson to teach your children..
You don't know have to work hard and do all your work..we will just threaten to sue the teacher!
I just don't understand parents like that!

Jeeeez! I guess this college student hasn't grown up yet, if Mommy and Daddy have to try to defend their son's poor academic performance. Will they sue the company when he gets his first job and doesn't get a raise???

Sadly that is typical. I learned very quickly in teaching that the teacher is always wrong and the parent/student is always right.

We had a teacher that was told to pass a board members child.

Other things that I have heard:

I don't call you when my child doesn't make his bed don't call me when he doesn't do his homework (this is a middle school parent)

Another- the child was failing- we are REQUIRED to notify the parent- I called several times over the course of 2 weeks. I finally got a message from the parent- stop calling I don't care!

My friend was told, when she called about moving a child from the Accerlerated program down to the Regents program that the reason the child was failing the course was because the teacher wasn't smart enough to teach her.

Some people just can't get beyond the thought that they child is at fault. It's terribly sad that that happens. I don't think they'll get far with suing the school!

I think its one thing when a student is in MS or HS...although I hated that....but come on...a college student?

I did get an F on a report card and I (calmly) left a message for the professor to recheck her numbers....she called back and apologized that it was a mistake...and she corrected it...

threatening tells me that he knows he is wrong...and suing the school...how pathetic can you be? wasted money to pay lawyers IMO

I'm sure that your stepfather has documented everything (teachers are good with this 'CYA')

I have a few friends who teach fourth grade. One of them had a student tell her, about the fourth grade testing, that they are testing the teachers not the students to make sure they are doing their jobs Why would you tell your kid that??!!

I'd take the threat seriously, remember what happened at Suffolk Community College a few weeks ago?

A student shot a teacher/professor at the Brentwood campus. I believe he was just released from a mental hospital. It was a few weeks ago. I tried to find the story on Newsday but couldn't.

That's right Nora! But I thought he stabbed him-- bad enough either way!

This is all that I found. Newsday is not letting me pull it up.

Police are searching for a student who eyewitnesses said stabbed a 45-year-old male adjunct professor while class was in session about 2:15 p.m. today at Suffolk Community College in Brentwood. After the stabbing, the student fled the scene, said Mary Lou Araneo, Suffolk Community College spokesman (Newsday).
