'Wow, Marisa got that FAT'

Well, that's how my father delivered the message to me when he got back home from his trip on Monday. (Thanks, Dad!)
I have definetely gained about 15 pounds since I last saw some of them and I'm petite (barely 5'1'), so it shows quicker on me. I'm usually not sensitive when it comes to my weight, but that one stung a little

i'm so sorry to hear that!

i experience that sometimes. my family is hispanic...and they are just as opinionated as your family is! i've been to events where the first thing out of a relative's mouth is: 'Wow, look how big your a** got!' Or, 'If you don't lose weight, you're gonna get sooooo fat!'

the kicker was when my sister's skinny b*tch cousin looked at a pic of me and my BF (who is tall and very slender) and said:
'He doesn't ask you to lose weight?' and I was like 'What??' and she said 'You mean, he's okay with you being..you know...like...big and stuff?' I of course said...'Uh...YEAH...he's okay with it.' and she showed the pic to hear husband..and said 'Look sweetie, there are ARE guys out there that like big girls...your sister could find someone! ' I guess his sis was some cow to her.

families can STINK sometimes!!

yes! my family is Italian too, and they do tend to point it out the moment you put on some weight. Try having someone say it directly at you! I went to visit family in Italy 2 years ago, and my uncle looked right passed me in a crowded room. When I re-introduced myself he said 'Boy I guess your father cooks good' (of course in Italian, but you get the drift!) they are charming. Don't let it bother you. It's just a cultural difference. For them it's something to talk about, to American's it's an insult.

I'm part italian, my grandfather on my dad side is italian. He made a comment to me 'you got fat!' and I told him 'yes and you are bald! grow hair and I'll loss weight!' I'm not shy with my family. I tell them whats on my mind!

Don't worry about them, as someone else said you can lose weight but they will always be jerks.

I know how you all feel my family is from Sicily and whoaaa momma do I ever hear it. and at the exact same time they open their mouths they are putting gallons of food in fron of me saying 'Monja Monja' (O and at 9 in the am I can't spell lol) You can't win so now I learned to tune them out and get real sarcastic. Such is our families. You have to grin and bare it and know that you are better than them and that you won't treat anyone like that.

I feel your pain. When I was in Italy a few months ago my aunts and grandmother said I was 'bella piena'. They will ALWAYS have something to say so I just ignored it.

Thanks so much...and thanks everyone for your kind words. It's true what a lot of you who have Italian families are saying. When you are over there, they just have a different mentality. They say it more as an observation, rather than trying to be offensive. You gotta love them, though. If it was someone over on this side of the ocean, I would have been a ton more pissed!

oh please - if I go up or down a pound, it becomes like an open invitation for my family to hold a press conference...

My family here doesn't really say much. Occasionally, my mother, in her own kind way, will advise me to try to keep my figure nice while I am young and to not let it go. She used to have a figure like mine when I was younger and has gained through the years...so she is looking out for me. Thanks, Mom!

My chinese future in laws say similar things about me. My FMIL was standing behind me and said 'ho fay ah' which means SO FAT. She said it in Cantonese, not realizing I KNEW what she was saying. Of course, standing next to a Chinese family, I will always look big. When Jimmy and I first met, they told me I was too skinny! When I try to diet, my FMIL gets mad at me and says I don't like her cooking! hehe. It is a struggle...

Man that hurts. When I tried on my wedding dress my mother told me my A$$ sticks out. I am not fat but I used to be 260 pounds and it still hurts when people comment on how I look. Mind you, I am not heavy by any means now and FH LOVES the fact that my A$$ sticks out!
