I don't know, but I have to say that I've seen PLENTY of young people on LI driving luxury cars, whether it's a BMW, Mercedes, or even a Porche. Not to sound like an old fogie (especially when I'm only 24), but it wasn't like this when I was in high school and I grew up in a pretty affluent area. It was rare that someone got a new car and even more rare that it was a high priced car. The same thing with handbags--none of us were sporting $600 Louis Vuitton bags at 15.

Re: This makes me sick...
Where I work i always see young kids driving expensive cars...like BMW's, Ferraris and even Porsches...Makes me nauses. When I was in school I had a 5 year old Ford Mustang. I think most of the kids drove old eldo's, riv's and montes....I don't understand how a parent can let their child have an expensive car as their first car. Scott

Re: This makes me sick...
PLEASE!! DH & I just had dinner down in Northport and it must be prom night & they had some sort of senior thingy in the park ... there were tons of party buses, stretch hummers, etc & so on ... and not that it necessarily reflects on their personal cars, but in 1986 when I went o my prom, I drove me & three friends into the Plaza in my aunt's 1985 Olsmobile Calais which OCCASSIONALY managed to get her to lend me.
Looking forward to my kids at 16 dirving a better car than I've ever had ...

Re: This makes me sick...
The article says it is a trend in Southern California & a few other metro areas. I think this is one of those areas.
we took a limo to the prom, but if we had taken my boyfreinds 1970-something station wagon, it may have broken down, as it was know to do. In front of my house. . on the Wantagh parway. . ., etc. ahh, fun times. . .
I went to school with a few spoiled kids that had new cars some luxury some not provided to them upon their completion of drivers' ed.
I was happy with my gold, yes I said gold hand-me-down oldsmobile; it got me from one place to another.

Re: This makes me sick...
It's annoying but I think that's some of what was said is disturbing. Did you guys read this quote:
'My parents and I have kind of an agreement. I have a 4.0 grade average. If it slips, my dad will be driving me to school,' said Blake Hamerslag, 16, of Rancho Santa Fe. His parents gave him a 2002 Mercedes ML430 SUV and a 2004 Chevy Suburban.
That is NOT a healthy expectation!!

Hmmm I'm not much older (about 3 months short of 29) but I will say I had a ton of those kids at my high school - in fact a number of the families I went to school with sued Nelson DeMille over the book the gold coast.
