This might be more of a rhetorical question...

This might be more of a rhetorical question...

Why are we so hard on ourselves?

About our weight, our looks....why?

This is coming from someone who spends lots of time berating herself - and I know that so many factors contribute - but why must it be this way?

Why can't we see ourselves the way that our friends see us? It's like friends shine the light only on the good. And in looking at ourselves, we just see what's in the shadows.

The things I say about myself - I wouldn't dare say about another person. I wouldn't even look at them so critically.

Maybe this is just a random vent.
:sigh:

I'm self abusive yet coddle others.

Whoa, this is a JessicaM. post!!!

They say we're our own biggest critic, but nobody ever really says why.

Maybe it's bc if we think 'I'm pretty' or 'I'm smart' then we run the risk of being dubbed egotistical. We'd rather think of ourselves negatively and have our friends bring us back up than think of ourselves positively and have no friends bc we're believed to be full of ourselves.

I was thinking about this yesterday. actually, I think about it a lot.

who sees the 'truth'?

or are both images skewed.

will it take paparazzi taking our pic and having strangers discuss and dissect for us to see some truth...

or is that still untrue...b/c those strangers will also be projecting their insecurities on to us......

FYI - I would totally not like you if you weren't so awesomely awesome.

You said it in your question. Our friends see our light... they don't see the dark spots. They don't know the spaces in our souls that are not illuminated. It is my darkest thoughts - my secret sins that turn me against myself.

I am the same way myself. I go through periods of really despising myself and everything about me. It's so hard for me to crawl out of that place.

Because people are mean and insecure and thus make the beautiful feel ugly to conceal their own insecurities.

In high school [weighing like 100 pounds MAX], a girl had me convinced I was fat b/c she said i was. Screwed me up for years.

Honestly - I feel we dont look at ourselves as a whole package - like, when you look at a friend - you see her as a whole - oh, there is Jane - you don't look at her and say - there are Jane's thighs, and her hair, there is her zit on her nose, the 5 pounds she gained, etc... but - thats how we look at ourselves - we dont look in the mirror and just see ourselves as a whole - we dissect our reflection to all sorts of parts and berate each one... Not sure if I'm answering the question of why - but I think it has a lot to do with the fact that society never lets us really be happy with ourselves. Imagine all the crap we would stop buying if we were happy with our reflections. So, they pummel us with images of who and what we should be, look like, etc.

Having critical parents dont help...
